STEPHEN SONDHEIM'S BIRTHDAY

Right now, I just thought “it can’t be Sondheim’s birthday!! His 90th birthday concert was just a few.... ohhh”

This pandemic has been going on too long.

It’s sort of amazing how few posts are on this thread so far.

What is there to say? He's not going to see this, and we all know he's great. Sondheim is one of the few celebrity birthdays I usually like to highlight on social media, but now I'm sort of like "meh, another Sondheim birthday. Happens every year!" Feels even more redundant on this message board, since we're all pretty much on the same page already. Plus, like Alex Kulak said, it feels like we just celebrated his 90th. Celebrating again feels like an unwelcome reminder of the pandemic dragging on and on (honestly I felt the same way about my own birthday, which was last week)

"but now I'm sort of like "meh, another Sondheim birthday. Happens every year!"...REALLY?...REALLY??

Every year that Sondheim is with us is another year of hope that he will complete his final musical...do not wait until this great man passes to celebrate him...CELEBRATE HIS LIFE NOW while he is still with us...

STEPHEN SONDHEIM'S BIRTHDAY

^ I'm with that sentiment. I'm so happy he's alive. However, I also didn't know what to say for his birthday. But I sure did celebrate! Rewatched the London recording of the Friedman Merrily We Roll Along, listened to some favorites, and watched an interview with him and Lapine from the '90s. I adore the man, he's an international treasure. Is it too much to ask for another 91 years?

Sondheim's work has been a constant presence in my life since I was 14 years old. I am not "waiting" to celebrate him.

I agree it's great that he's still with us at 91 years old. And I continue to hold out hope that he'll give us one last work. And actually, I did take the opportunity to listen to his music on my commutes this week.

My earlier post was about how we go about celebrating his birthday on social media, and on this message board. My point is that there just isn't really much to say. If I posted a paragraph on social media last year about how much Sondheim means to me, there's no point in trying to think of something new to say this year, when the same people will likely be reading it. And likewise, most people on this board are already fans of Sondheim, and fully aware of his greatness, and the fact that it was his birthday. So what was there to say on this thread?

But if it means that much to others: Happy birthday Steve!!
