This has probably been spoken about before but I just wanted to bring it up again because I know it's supposed to come out this year...or so says IMDB.com. Has anyone heard anything about the film?
I am so glad Sam Mendes is directing...he is one of my favorite stage directors and has made some excellent films. I'm wondering about the cast goes...I've heard talk about Meryl Streep or Glenn Close for Mrs. Lovett...and about Kevin Spacey for Sweeney...but I don't know how legit those rumors are.
Any ideas on who you'd like to see cast? I, personally, would love to see Bernadette as Mrs.Lovett...but I don't know if she'll get picked.
Peters, against type to be sure, isn't a bad choice. The character is compelling because she doesn't look like a monster.
But also, wouldn't Peters make a heartbreaking Begger Woman? In light of who the character turns out to be?
I also think Brenda Blethlyn would be a fascinating Mrs. Lovett. (She does sing...)
Peters for the Beggar Woman is interesting....although I don't know if I can imagine her singing it. Maybe I'm wrong.
Imelda Staunton for Mrs. Lovett!!
It would be fun to get back into Sweeney again.
Love the work of Mendes.
I really don't like to think about anyone else as Mrs. Lovett except Patti Lupone. but that'll never happen... Updated On: 2/23/05 at 08:22 PM
You think of Patti Lupone before Angela Lansbury?
I would LOVE if Lansbury could make a cameo! I would literally pee myself in the theatre if I saw that.
Will not be released this year. Film is still in the works. Mendes is still attached.
Same here, that would be great. If Mendes if doing it, no doubt it will be excellent.
This girl told me that she heard it was Kevin Kline for Sweeney Todd........
CapnHook: OBVIOUSLY it won't be released this year, it hasn't even been cast yet....
Kevin Kline would be wonderful!!!!!!!
Yes, obviously. Why mock me? I didn't ASK the question...
Kline, good choice, too. (He has to stop playing teachers..)
And Imelda -- yes, yes! Bravo! That's it! And she sings (listen to the British INTO THE WOODS.)
What question?
Imelda Staunton would be BRILLIANT as Mrs. Lovett, that needs to happen.
Julie Walters!!! as Mrs Lovett! (I would be soo excited if that happened).
I keep hearing that the movie isn't gonna happen. (Hope it does) :) I love the idea of Kline as Sweeney he will/would be great (i've heard he is Sweeney if it gets made).
I'd like to see Jamie Bell as Tobias. Elijah Wood could do it too.
If Kevin Spacey comes anywhere NEAR that role some heads are going to roll.
Where's my pistol?
Priest, wouldn't it be more appopriate if you baked him in a pie instead?
Though I saw Patti at Lincoln Center, I will never forget my three times seeing Angela live at the Uris.
Munk, I love your avatar which has everything to do with the best show of all time NINE!
As you can tell from my icon, I *kinda* like "Sweeney Todd," and naturally I'd love to see it get turned into a film version, as long as it's a good one. However, at this rate, I don't think it's going to happen. The movie has been rumored since the play debuted 25 years ago--back then there were reports of Kevin Kline and Julie Andrews(!) starring in a film version. Tim Burton had long been rumored as a director before Sam Mendes was attached, and now it seems the everlasting delay is only going to continue.
By the way, I wouldn't believe any casting rumors you hear--I've heard so many different things, with Sweeneys ranging from Russell Crowe to Hugh Jackman and Mrs. Lovetts from Kate Winslett to Bernadette Peters--honestly, nothing is even close to being set yet.
Well, as far as IMDB.com is concerned...the movie's status was recently changed from "pre-production" to "in production."
Don't trust anything IMDB says.
And, actually, Kate Winslet as Lovett kind of intrigues me.
Can she sing?
Really? Ooo...thanks for telling me. I'll have to check that out...
