There were tons of stories,
Some were that they were difficult backstage.
Other stories were that Weissler's didn't want them to take away the spotlight from Applegate.
And then some believe the Weissler's realized they were too young for the roles. Nickie and Helene should have some years on Charity.
LaManna and DeCosta were great in the roles, and were the perfect age.

Ljay, I'm not sure I agree with you on this. Gwen Verdon was a year older than Hellen Gallagher and about fifteen years older than Thelma Oliver, Chita Rivera and Shirley MacLaine are of the same age, and Bebe Neuwirth is actually younger than Debbie Allen by seven or eight years. Either way you probably were referring more to looking older than Charity, rather than being older in terms of age.
I've heard BobbyBubby's argument repeatedly though and is the one I'm more inclined to believe.
