All these threads like, "Bad songs in good shows," etc. inspired me to post this thread! What are some sad songs in funny shows? Or vice versa?
For me, it's "Where am I going?" from SWEET CHARITY.
Anything else?
There's a Fine, Fine Line from Avenue Q
Really funny show, really sad song.
The I Love You Song in Spelling Bee
Come to think of it, a lot of the other songs are kinda sad too - I Speak Six Languages, the reprises of I'm Not that Smart and Woe is Me. If not sad, they definitely make you feel sorry for the character...
"The Dream" in Fiddler I find pretty funny. And Fiddler's pretty sad.
"Broadway Baby" in Follies. If you look at it Elaine Stritch's way, it feels like something from Les Miserables, but my way, it's just a bouncy, happy song in a very psychological, dark show.
Sad in funny--
The reprise of "Just You Wait 'Enry 'Iggins" in Act 2 of My Fair Lady.
"Where Am I Going?" in Sweet Charity (Gwen's rendition is priceless.)
"Nowadays" from Chicago. (Another one of those priceless Verdon performances) I don't know why it's sad...it's just...well, maybe because the show's ending? Haha, no, it just seems sad.
"The I Love You Song" - Spelling Bee
So Sad!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I second "There's a Fine, Fine Line" in Avenue Q. I was seriously in tears, and so was my dad.
On the vice-versa note, I'd say "Master of the House" from Les Miz.
I wouldn't quite say it's sad, but "I Know Where I've Been" is certainly a contrast to the humor in Hairspray.
Ooh, definitely "Gee Officer Krupke" as funny in West Side Story.
"No One is Alone" as sad in Into the Woods.
finale a in rent (well actually its just really happy after all the sadness, until you get whalloped again when mimi enters)

Master of the House in Les Miserables.
I agree with wickedrentq, 'I Know Where I've Been' from Hairpsray and 'Master of the House' from Les Mis.
"Love Sneaks In" from DIRTY ROTTEN SCOUNDRELS (A gorgeously underrated song)

Tell Her I Love Her from Urinetown.
I Find "My Strongest Suit" hysterical in aida, which is a pretty sad show.
"Distant Melody" is really sad from Peter Pan.
"Thats the Showbiz" from Ragtime
"Soldier's Gossip" from Passion
"Home" from Beauty and the Beast is surprisingly depressing, (especially when you're going away for college).
"Good and Evil" is necessarily funny, but it is the lightest moment in Jekyll and Hide.
"Change" is one of the funniest moments in the melancholy A New Brain
"Surabya Santa" and "Just One Step" from songs for a new world.
"Summer in Ohio" and "Climbing Uphill" from Last five years.
There are so many ups and downs in Lippa's Wild Party, I can't Classify it, But the saddest moment is "How Did We Come To This" and the Funniest is "Lesbian Love Story"---the line about beavers totally gets me everytime.
Wouldn't call it a "sad" song...but I KNOW WHERE I'VE BEEN in HAIRSPRAY gives an otherwise VERY funny show some serious balls. I love it!
I wish I could go back to college... Ave Q
I'm in college, and it makes me sad that after college im going to want to go back.
I say "The Party's Over" from Bells are Ringing.
Thanks for reminding me, PeggyandVelma.
