The star-packed adaptation of the 1930s-set melodrama will feature Samuel Jackson and John David Washington with Ray Fisher, Danielle Deadwyler, Michael Potts and Corey Hawkins offering support. Produced by Todd Black and Denzel Washington, the film will be directed and co-written by Malcolm Washington, with Virgil Williams serving as the co-writer. What happened to Danielle Brooks?
I was wondering about Brooks myself - I figured it had something to do with the filming schedules of Piano Lesson and her holiday film Oh What Fun (plus having a child under the age of five), but then I was reminded of a NYT interview where it says, “Brooks was candid about how much work goes into forging a screen career like hers. It’s hard not to take some setbacks personally, she said, noting that though she participated in the 2022 Broadway revival of August Wilson’s “The Piano Lesson,” the forthcoming movie version recast her role with Danielle Deadwyler.”
Two days ago, John David Washington said both Brooks and Deadwyler were ‘the next Viola Davis’. Deadwyler is newer to the scene and has a lot of work in quick succession, and they’ve made a point to not address the casting change. It just seems very strange to recast someone who is as talented, awarded, and highly regarded as Brooks.

I just finished watching the movie. There's a lot going on thematically, maybe too much, but I really appreciated Malcom Washington's directorial touches. I'm excited to see what he does in the future.
The acting is good across-the-board. I can understand why some think John David Washington is playing it too big, but that's also part of his character, and he also has some very effective quieter moments. Danielle Deadwyler is flat-out terrific.
