Some may read her son's comments as indicative of an ego trip, but I don't think this is the case. I think it's the typical actor's problem of attempting to fit the reality of a "track" with their own interpretation of the character, which many performers have successfully done in the past. And when it didn't resolve itself quickly enough, because of age or whatever other factors may have been at play, either she or the production team felt it was best that she bow out.
Currently, the line they're sticking to is that after whatever "family obligations" have been attended to, she will return to the show. As this woman is a talent paralleled by very few, I hope they come to some sort of compromise if creative differences are at the root of this departure, and that she does come back.
Failing that, I hope she comes back in another (better) show.
