The food itself is nothing special, I'm afraid.
If you just want to experience it, I recommend going after a show and just having drinks and dessert. My mom likes to do that with me every time she's in town. You won't even have to make a reservation.

I go each time I'm in the City
The deserts are amazing and the atmosphere is even more amazing.
Go if you can! It's worth it.

Food was just ok for the price. Atmosphere is really cool. I'd go again, especially for a special occasion.
I like Angus McIndoe's much better, though.

I went there last year after Les Miz with my parents. It was fun. I can now say I ate at Sardi's, although the food didn't really blow me away.
P.S. Apostrophes are good. Otherwise you run the risk of exciting Dr. Who fans who think you just made a typo.

Posted: 1/15/09 at 1:11pmSounds good! I was thinking of just ordering appetizers - do they give you a tiny amount? Sometimes the appetizers are as big as the meals.

The appetizers are tiny, but you can order several of the main meals in appetizer portions...and those plates often bigger than the "regular" appetizers. Make sense?
I echo everyone else on the thread: amazing atmosphere, fun drinks, okay food that is way overpriced. And the coffee is not that good.

GO TO SARDI'S - - - it is Broadway history, have a drink or something.
I to this day still love the atmosphere of it. You have to say you have been there!

Ha, mortgageguy, mine just LOVES that chocolate cake they serve. I don't have the heart to tell her it's basically the same souffle-like thing you can find at pretty much any upscale restaurant in New York.

Posted: 1/15/09 at 3:46pmCalvin, too funny....and SO true! I am in Chicago visiting the parents this week, my mother is always so worried that the restaurants they take me to aren't as nice in Chicago as they are in NY....considering the few places she like to go when she comes to see me in NY, I am wondering what she is basing this off of! HA!

Posted: 1/15/09 at 4:14pmAgreed with what most people say, get drinks and dessert. To me the food was appalling and the atmosphere was more touristy than theatery. Also the service left a little to be desired. As quaint as the theater drawings and memorabilia are, I'd just say go to 9th instead, a better meal and more enjoyable.

Posted: 1/19/09 at 4:55pmI went to Sardi's before seeing Gypsy and I must say what an atmosphere. It is such an amazing place to be and is a monumental place in theatre history. I love the caricatures and I actually enjoyed the food a lot. We had this madras curry and it was excellent.

Posted: 1/19/09 at 4:57pmThe food itself is over-priced and not very good. I agree with others- just go for a pre-show drink or a post-show drinks and dessert.

Posted: 1/19/09 at 5:53pmThe drinks are to die for and the food isn't awful. I recommend the canneloni -- you can get it as an appetizer or a main course. I've never had a bad experience with a waiter there and I've been going since 1960. And everyone's there because they have some connection with the theatre, either as a customer or as part of the profession.
