Saturday Night (Off-Broadway, 2000)

Did anyone see this Off-Broadway? It seems like a killer cast (David Campbell, Lauren Ward, Christopher Fitzgerald, Andrea Burns) & creative team (including Kathleen Marshall as director & Jonathan Tunick's orchestrations). Plus there is a good cast recording to boot. And the novelty of it being the very first Sondheim show ever - but it only ran for 6 weeks. Was there ever ambition to go further? Did it sell well? How did audiences and critics respond?

Give me claws and a hunch, just away from this bunch.

Sweet production with a respectable set, fine cast, okay choreography. But sheesh what an uninteresting script! And to tell the truth, the young proto-Sondheim score didn't have nearly enough charms to hold the thing up. Sorry to not offer a rave here.

I saw it. Maybe he was having an off night, but David Campbell was the least interesting person to me. It was my first time seeing Christopher Fitzgerald and his “Exhibit A” is what I remember most. It was fun seeing the early Sondheim everyone had heard about but never seen, but beyond the novelty it wasn’t particularly thrilling.

Campbell is a major presence in Australia (his home country) and is a major cabaret artist. It’s possible that he decided not to stay in the US longterm.
