I actually thought it was really cute the way they had the characters intertwining like that... It's supposed to be the untold story of the Wicked Witch of the West.... it's technically not tied into the Wizard of Oz.
Call me a dumbass for not seeing it coming or a sucker for a happy ending but I audibly gasped when Fiyero came out onstage as the Scarecrow, knocked on the trapdoor and helped Elphie out.
But hey, that's just me
I am definitely glad I had read the book before seeing the show... there were a few things that made a little more sense to one another.

One should not need to read the book in order to understand a story being told in another medium. Major flaw.

CJR; I am so happy you enjoyed Wicked. I loved it too. I saw Wonderful Town this afternoon and was terribly dissapointed. Happy Birthday by the way.

I should clarify... I would have understood the show FINE having not read the book. Just some things were kinda like "oooh!" having read the book first. I still would have understood it.

And you don't think the ending was a complete cheat and a betrayal of the source material? It's bad enough that the point of the novel was to show that who's wicked and who's not is entirely a matter of interpretation, with the original ending of the witch's life being dramatized to hammer the point home. But no. They wanted two women protragonists on stage, instead of one. And they completely diluted any power in the story with that completely unearned ending.

i didn't even read the novel and i felt cheated by the ending. and i got comped too. the show was a mess, but i would have given it the benefit of the doubt had they kept such a strong statement as the ending. finding out later that ending is contrary to the source material just confirms the soullessness of the creators.

It will be interesting to see how they market Change. Speaking of which ( and getting back to Wicked)... Wicked is doing phenomenally at the box office. Tried to buy another single tickets for August and all they had was side Orchestra. They have run a very succesful coupon and internet campaign. Kudos to the marketing team. The Gershwin has always been a hard house to fill.

glad u like the show!! I left the show loving it and couldn't wait to go back. Yet i agree with alot of the things said in this thread. The ending SHUD have been different, even tho i wud have cried even harder, but i love being moved by a show. Its a show that you love watching, and hearing the two leads sing there hearts out. Yet going back and analyzing, you see alot of flaws or things you arent to fond of. For one, i LOVED the wizard's character in the book compared to the musical's interpurtation. I think he should have been more menacing.
Growing up with the Wizard of Oz as an all time fav. movie it hit home watching it and i loved the story line and how everything was intertwined together. but i do believe it cud have been tweeked (spelling?) a bit more before opening.

RENT was the first show i fell inlove with when i was in the 7th grade and just saw it two weeks ago. i was so worried that they wouldnt be like the OBC that i have been listening to on the cast album for the past 6 yrs. I was pleasantly surprised with the casting and even more surprised to find out that 3 of the main characters were all swings/understudies. I think the cast is getting the thing it lost back because the people they are casting have been listening to RENT growing up. (the joanne i saw was 24) so i woudlnt be surprised if this was a very influential show to them and they have something new to bring to the table. Ugh im just rambling now! i better stop now or i never will.

Okay, so NAMO who died and made you a critic for the New York Times, a composer, or a Broadway actor for that matter. What ever happened to "in my opinion", because that is all it is. Your opinion. If you didn't leave the theatre humming the tunes or you didn't find it memorable then so be it. Don't make it seem as though something is bad for everyone else only because you didn't care for it. And so what if it is not the exact same as the book, it's fun, entertaining and it tells a story. You people crack me up bashing things that you have no clue as to what you speak. Trying finding the good in things, no show is going to be "perfect" in a sense. try enjoying rather criticizing.

So lemme see if I follow your logic, 30. If I were a critic for the Times or a composer or an actor (and really, I could be one or all of the above!) my opinion could be presented as fact? I have to preface my opinions with "in my opinion" because the fact that my opinions are posted next to my name and icon does not make that clear, in your opinion?
You may think Wicked is fun and entertaining, but you saying it tells a story doesn't change the fact that it tells it badly. I am not paying over a hundred dollars to overlook the shoddy craftsmanship that went into the book of that musical, as well as the mostly unmemorable tunes, with some Pollyanna desire to look for the good and not criticize. I'll do that when they pay ME over a hundred dollars to sit through that mess again.
Your big clue should be how many people who call themselves fans of the show admit that you have to overlook the huge and glaring flaws. Frankly, they're too big to ignore.

Well, I think you had better check your "facts", because I think that the show tells the story rather well. Sure it has some differences from the book, but who cares? If they kept the ending from the book the exact same, then people would be complaining that it should've been happier or it should've been this or that...blah, blah, blah. Lots of worthwhile projects that started in other mediums are different from their original format.

The show with the two witches and a wizard, a flying monkey or two...I think that with the exception of the wizard's songs, most of the other songs are completely memorable! Before I had read the book or seen the show, I bought the cast recording and was immediately drawn into the story through the songs. Defying Gravity, No Good Deed, For Good...what powerful songs!

So let me see if I understand you, NAMO. Even if you were a theatre critic, actor, etc. your opinion would be your opinion which doesn't make it fact. And the way you write about the show, no matter how you feel is your own personal opinion and just because you feel a certain way about something doesn't necessarily mean that everyone else is going to feels the same. If you didn't like the show then you didn't like but don't bash it. you don't have any clue why it was different from the "source" material. So I think you should keep your opinions to yourself. Or at least not go on and on about how you didn't like it. Because there are many others who love it.

It means I have seen the current cast a lot and they are BORED. They have had their good shows and I have had the pleasure to see them, but I have also been to enough bad ones to stop spending money on that show in risk of catching one of their "off-nights." Everyone is going to have different opinions about these things...nothing makes your opinion a fact or other's opinions "wrong."

i think there are good and bad things about Wicked... I read the book before seeing the show, and was disappointed that there were many plotlines left out, but it WAS a complicated book and i don't think there was any way the creators could have included everything in the play... However, there were many things that should have been explained, such as the dragon that overhangs the stage, or the persecution of the Animals... I agree that the character of the Wizard should have been more menacing... In my opinion, there were a couple of memorable songs, the two mentioned, and I would also like to include "For Good" which, to me, is probably the best song in the show, and probably easiest to perform out of context... The effects were less than satisfying... where was the flying? there should have been flying... if Peter Pan can fly, if the Beast can change into the Prince right before your eyes, then the WWoftheW and the monkeys should be flying... and, i admit that there were a couple of points in the show that brought a few tears to my eyes...
but i do have to say, my overall experience was less than satisfying...
It will be interesting to see what might be done with "Confessions of an Ugly Stepsister", should it be made into a musical...

I think CatsNYrevival summed it up for me in his post about the show. I mean really - does anyone think that the costume for Dr. Dillamond is any good? just THINK what Julie Taymor could have done with the design of this show - and with the use of puppetry today - lots of cool stuff could have been done that way. Buf of course, none of these things could have helped the writing, which in my opinion is just pretty lame.
