When I saw her she was unimpressive...so either you ALL are delusional or she got better :) I'm sure it's the second one...

Stephanie I agree with you. When I saw Saycon I was very underwhelmed by her performance.

What's with all of the Shoshana bashing? Shoshana is OBVIOUSLY talented, or she wouldn't be the lead in the hottest ticket on Broadway. Sorry that she isn't your precious Idina, but try listening to Idina toward the end of her run.

Shoshana has talent, that's not opinion, that's fact.

i think we all know whoever is going to take over the role next, Saycon or not, will receive the same treatment. it's all because of people being tired of the wicked threads and putting it down where they can. honest observation.

I've heard wonderful things about her... Isn't she going to be in Color Purple? I hope I get to see her in that...

Wow! I asked if anyone had seen Saycon't performance and although I got one response - which was very positive, I've apparently triggered a torrent of Shoshana-bashing.

This isn't about putting down any professional and make no mistake - Shoshana is as professional as they get. This was a simple question about how Saycon is progressing, so put your swords back in their sheaths and try to respond with dignity.

I didn't get to see Sho like I was supposed to, so I saw Saycon, and was just like ehhh about the whole show. Then I see the tour in Chicago, with Steph, and am absolutly in love with the show...
Steph is by far the best Elphaba I've seen (Jenna close second, Ana thrid, Saycon 4th)

Glindafan,

I totally agree, but some people just have to make every thread about osmething negative..."This performer sucks!" or "I can't believe she is on stage!" It's utterly ridiculous. Everyone on Broadway has some talent, some more than others. We should be respecting them because they were the few, the chosen few, who were chose to be in a Broadway show, something I would say 99.9% of us hope to do someday.

It's just...pathetic

shoshana's my favorite elphaba.

you shoshana bashers are stating what you make seem like a fact. for instance, "shoshana is horrible". its fine with me if thats your opinion, but you could say something like "i think shoshana is horrible" or "in my opinion shoshana is horrible". don't make it seem like a fact because it's certainly not.

if you hate shoshana, i respect your opinion, but don't expect everyone else to feel the same way.

willact... i agree 100%

I have only seen Saycon on coughvideocough, but I absolutely LOVE Shoshana. She has grown into the role so well and I will stand by her no matter what anyone on the board has to say.

I have a fantasy that Idina, Shoshana, Saycon, Eden, Stephanie, Jenna, Ana, Kristy, etc. etc. all got together in Chicago and just sang "Defying Gravity" one after the other.

Think it'll happen? :P HaHa.

Actor,

Can we make it like American Idol get all the judges there, and then we call in and vote and desided once and for all who is the greatest Elphba.

Haha, sure, but I have a feeling that crazy "Wicked" fans would end up murdering Simon if he dared open his mouth to criticize just about any of them. HaHa.

hahaha i liked that one. Personally, I think that would be one of the greatest events ever just having them in a straight line and just sing it solo straight through so maybe we can cut back posts here on who is the best elphaba

I saw the 9/7 evening show, and I'm happy to report that I think Saycon would make a wonderful full-time Elphaba.

She's clearly only played this role on stage a handful of times. I thought the same thing when I saw Megan Hilty at the beginning of June: she's an incredibly talented woman who just needs to learn where she fits on the stage, and how to make sure everyone's focused on her at all times. Given how well Ms. Hilty has adapted to her role in just a few months, I think Saycon would be able to do the same. She's gorgeous in green (the green she was made up in tonight looked darker and brighter than the makeup she was using back in April--more like the test photos we've seen of her), and her Elphaba from Dear Old Shiz through One Short Day is tentative and kind of shy. There's none of the sarcasm you get with Shoshana, and none of the pent-up fire you get with Idina. What you do get is a sense of sadness about her outsider status (particularly in Dear Old Shiz). Thinking about it, I'm pretty sure that going for Shy, Innocent, Sad Elphaba is the hardest character path to choose as an actress--there's really nothing there to draw upon when you have to change over to Defying Gravity mode, unless you've done a masterfully subtle job in the previous scenes. Props to Saycon for trying it, and I think she can pull it off given more time to work at it, but tonight the transition into Proud, Defiant Elphaba seemed a little abrupt. That transition is really my only critique of her, as I was so excited to see an understudy making a complete departure from the way the role is usually played.

As for her vocals, her Wizard and I was fairly tentative (possibly a character choice), and she cracked a little on "THINGS I've never felt" (oddly, the exact same note that Eden cracked on when I saw her in July 2004...maybe that's a good omen, given how awesome Eden turned out to be). Her I'm Not That Girl was great, particularly the last note--it seemed effortless for her, which is nice to see. Her Defying Gravity started out a little quietly, but once she started to rise, it was like she was pulling a veil off of the voice we'd been hearing for the past hour and a half--there was nothing tentative or shy about it. Her vowels are gorgeous, and her belting was, too. The other thing that made me particularly happy was her vocal blending with Megan. With Shoshana, the place where their vocals come together seems kind of nasal. With Saycon, the blending sounds really, really good.

Act 2 Elphaba seemed a little disconnected from Act 1 Elphaba, personality-wise, but that was fine with me (again, given the time to work on the transition, I think her portrayal will be amazing). The highlight of the night for me, vocally, was her As Long as You're Mine. I (like many of you, probably) associate a different actress with each of Elphaba's songs--Eden is The Wizard and I, Idina is Defying Gravity, Shoshana is No Good Deed--and now I have one for As Long as You're Mine. The final set of notes and the harmony with David were fantastic, and she riffed a little bit toward the end. Her No Good Deed was also excellent, and it really showed off how powerful her voice is. By the time For Good rolled around, she seemed to be losing her speaking voice a bit--she cracked on one of her semi-spoken "because I knew you"s, and it didn't seem like an "I'm crying" crack. Her singing voice didn't suffer, though--she sang through the rest of the song beautifully. I'm really glad to have seen Saycon, and I hope she gets to play the role more and settle into it. I think she could be a wonderful and different take on Elphaba than the ones we've seen previously.
