I've seen I think 6 different productions of Hamlet and the ghost has never been scary. I don't think he should be. He's not really a malevolent force.
HOWEVER... I was the Scottish king in Mr. and Mrs. Mackers Go To Scotland and our Banquo scared me every single time he entered. He wore one of those clear Halloween masks with the face painted on.

Scary.

It's a form of English slang sort of; it's very colloquial.
It's like the American use of "very" or "absolutely."
Tobiasragg-- Well, Weez is English... I guess that explains it!
It's not really new so much as it is northern. It's a colloquialism. If you don't like it, console yourself with the thought that people in England can't possibly know how to speak English properly anyway.
How is Old Hamlet's Ghost not meant to be malevolent? "O hai, I just dredged myself up from the depths of purgatory to bully Horatio and order my son to murder his uncle". (I think it's the "bullying Horatio" part that bothers me most. Thank heaven Horatio won't be bullied! Bless 'im. :3)

Weez, what part of the UK are you from?
"Why can't the English learn how to speak!"
South. About thirty miles west of London. Most of my family comes from Liverpool though, so my speech patterns have been affected by that over the years. I never pronounce things like "glass" as "glarss", like most southerners do, for example, 'cos I got picked on at the dinnertable for doing so. XP
Okay, maybe malevolent wasn't the word I was looking for. I guess I just don't imagine him being "frightening." For sure, he should LOOK ghostly, but I don't think he's meant to scare.
I guess it comes down to production and personal preference. He scares the dignity out of Marcellus, and seeing as he's a palace guard, I'd like to imagine he's a *little* unflappable.
Heck, if I saw any ghost, I think I'd be pretty terrified, even if it was only Caspar!

Ohh cool.
I'm American, but I'm taking my A-levels in a centre here in the states. (It's complete torture)
Love London, Liverpool is quite nice as well.
I love the countryside the most though, it's beautiful.

Exactly. I don't think it's so much that his appearance is imposing so much as it is that a GHOST itself is imposing. I don't think he needs to look like a rotting corpse to scare someone.
All this being said, I wouldn't be opposed to a frightening ghost. I'm always down for some theatrical shocks.
It's very pretty. If you drive a few miles, there's a lot of woods and fields around where I am, and on a nice day, it's real Enid Blyton country. Which isn't that shocking, when you consider she's a local lass. XD But if you ever read any of her books and thought the countryside sounded particularly nice, that's near where I grew up. :)

You're so lucky!!
I love it out there.
I really want to live in London, Liverpool, or Kent.
English culture (well, the education system more so) has played a rather large role in my life, and it's made me want to live there!
I love how green it is, and the fresh air.
Great stuff.
Oh, the giant Kate Monster which climbs over the houses in Avenue Q freaked me out a lot.
Someone mentioned the siren from August: Osage County, I swear there's one before the sheriff knocks on the door in Act One and that filled me with alarm and panic.
The end of Shining City. I literally had nightmares after I saw that.

I recently saw a production of "Thugs" at a local theatre, and the audience was surrounding the stage, which was just the center of a room[ of the store-front theatre], and there's a part where the power goes out and screams are hard and there are flickers of light and supposedly a murderer going around the building...I was so scared in the dark I was actually screaming in my seat and grabbing my friend next to me. And the actors were no more than 2 feet in front of me, and everyone in the theatre was really screaming. It was terrifying.
