re: Schwartz Is Writing An Opera??

Hey, if they give him awards for bland scores like "Wicked" then I guess he thinks he can write an opera.

He didn't get an award for Wicked. I think he'll do great. No doubt it will be poppy, but I'm sure it will at least have a few good songs.

He didn't get an award for Wicked.

Yes he did. He won a Grammy.

Not that it was merited.

re: Schwartz Is Writing An Opera??

He also won a drama desk for Best Lyrics for Wicked.

Which boggles my mind. Terrible lyrics.

re: Schwartz Is Writing An Opera??

I don't think the Grammy had anything to do with the actual music from the Cd. I read a while back that the Grammy is more of an award for the best produced CD. So, like the best sound quality, etc. And yeah, if anything, I would have given him an award for music, not lyrics.

re: Schwartz Is Writing An Opera??

I highly doubt that the Grammy is based totally on sound quality, etc.

It has to have something to do with content.

re: Schwartz Is Writing An Opera??

Exactly Curtain. I'm pretty sure it has to do with the technical aspects, as well as sells. But again, I'm not 100% sure. I'm sure someone else has more info than me.

re: Schwartz Is Writing An Opera??

The Grammy went to WICKED not because of Schwartz's banal lyrics and mediocre music, but because it was the most popular of the bunch and it sold the most copies. That's all.

I say good for him. Look - he knows how to write a strong melody, can delve psychologically into characters, his work tends to lean towards thru-sung approach (Children of Eden), its a great story, it doesn't say if he'll write the lyrics (usually an opera is setting a libretto to music). I find it very intriging and I can't wait to see what he comes up with.

I need to confessa that I think it will be fun to listen to.

I enjoy most of his music and I think "Wicked" is clever and fun. I look forward to the opera.

Wow, all you guys really must have acheived a lot in your lives to be so dismissive of Stephen Schwartz's opera plans! Don't be shy, let's hear about YOUR future projects.

re: Schwartz Is Writing An Opera??

There is a whole lot more to opera than just having a through-sung score.

Who is his director? Will he be his own libbrettist?

Often opera composers orchestrate and arrange the score themselves. Can he do this?

Now to get really dishy, I was chatting with one of Mr. Schwartz's collaborators, a reasonably well known name around town, who said "I'll never work with Stephen Schwartz again and you can quote me!"

"Hmm" I thought, "that isn't good."

maybe he'll adapt some of the other Gregory McGuire books for the operatic stage

WOSQ- Isn't he known as being slightly difficult to work around with? I've only heard rumors though, so I'm not making any judging assumptions.

re: Schwartz Is Writing An Opera??

To answer a previous question, Stephen's son, Scott Schwartz is directing.

I, for one, think this entire project sounds interesting. Remember people, just because you have someone's writing style "pegged" doesn't mean they're not capable of other things. Thing of some of the strong choral work in Children of Eden, etc. That doesn't mean it'll SOUND like COE. I believe that many of the people who're voicing, shall we say, negative opinions, probably aren't familar with the entire Schwartz canon. Of course, you're entitled to your own opinion, but let's hold off until we have access to more of the project. Not a single note of music, or lyric has been written yet! Let's give this a chance.

You know, as much as I don't like this idea based upon his "Wicked" and Disney work, you are 100% correct. I liked the score for "Pippin" and I like "Day by Day" so who knows?
