Searching for other lonely theatre nerds

Just wondered if anyone else here chats on this board b/c they have no one else to talk about theatre stuff with? I get SO frustrated b/c theatre (both musicals and plays) brings me so much joy that I always have this huge need to talk with other people about what I love. However, all of my friends who love theatre live far away right now and so now I rely on this board for theatre freak companionship. Is this sick?

Are any of you in the same boat as I am or am I just behaving like a stupid kid again?

re: Searching for other lonely theatre nerds

I used to be the same way. I'm from a small town in minnesota and non of my friends were as involved as me so the only person i had to talk with was my father. Don't get me wrong I value my fathers opinion and knowledge, but it is better to be able to talk with ppl with the same experience that you have. So now that I go to an arts high school, in a larger town, I have friends to talk about theater with, and I have 5 hours of theater class everyday.

Hi. That's kinda me...except for the 'nerd' part of it. I don't have many friends who like this type of art form so I love talking to others on this board who have the same passion I do.

I'm in the same boat-when I hear trigger words in the street, like 'Nobody's got no class' or 'gary beach from La Cage' I start smiling like an idiot...others like me exist...I am not the only one...but then I realize a lot more people like theatre than I realize, I just dont know any of them. So very sad...

re: Searching for other lonely theatre nerds

lol. believe me, you are NOT alone, here, wicked bacchae. I'm practically the only person in my group who listens to musicals and such. They just look at me when I start humming showtunes randomly. Sad times. And I'm all the way over here on the west coast so I totally feel alone most of the time. re: Searching for other lonely theatre nerds

re: Searching for other lonely theatre nerds

Another one here.

A few years ago I met a new friend in NY who was a total theatre buff and it was like finding an oasis in the desert. I LOVED talking theatre trash with her (and visiting with her so I could see as much theatre as possible while I was in NY.) She's gone now and the only place I have to come for theatre news is the Internet. It does make you feel like a bit of a odd ball when you can't even talk about an exciting play you've seen, (or something sad - like Daniel Davis) with anyone but a computer!

ME TOO! at my school, we have a really good theatre program, but nobody LOVES it like I do! My friends aren't into it that much either, so I was really lonely. So now I have BWW to get all my Broadwayness out!

I go to Indiana University, which has a huge performing arts crowd, but I'm originally from New York, and I like to keep up with the Broadway gossip!

re: Searching for other lonely theatre nerds

I have the same problem. I have maybe 4 or 5 friends who like/love theatre, but I am the insane obsessed one in my group. Must of my friends don't get why everytime they ask me something 'safe' (like, whenever poeple ask "What's the time?" I feel the need to sing all of Out Tonight) I burst out into song. Thank goodness for BWW! I don't know what I would do without it, lol, my friends think that I can now 'control' my Broadwayness. Yeah, right! =P

re: Searching for other lonely theatre nerds

lolre: Searching for other lonely theatre nerds yeah, my friends are kind of baffled when I find a way to associate evrything they say with a broadway lyric or idea. we were talking about dreams and I statrd singing "I dreamed a dream" with full emotion. It kind of freaked them out, but I can't control myeslf!!!!!!!!!

re: Searching for other lonely theatre nerds

There is always hope Wicked Bacchae- When i met my boyfriend 3+ years ago, he was a hard-core Rocker who couldn't stand my Showtune obsession. The sound of Jennifer Holiday about to belt made him bolt.

Friends gave us a pair of tickets for the Hairspray tour. He went, grudgingly and LOVED it. I talked him into a new York trip to Hairspray, but by the time we got there, he had listened to my Wicked CD so many times he almost levitated when we got to the Gershwin. We also got to see Gypsy on that trip and after it was over he turned to me and said "You know, I didn't think it possible, but I think that Gyspy is Even Better than Hairspray."

Now he listens to showtunes all the time and we go to shows all the time. He'll say things like "Maybe we need to go to NY and see Harvey while he's in Fiddler...."

And he listens to Dreamgirls all the time now!

It's wonderful!

re: Searching for other lonely theatre nerds

This is great... now I know I am not alone! I'm like oxdreaminxo in that, I have a few friends with me here that like theatre but I'm the "obsessed" one. They all have lives outside theatre but I really don't. My life is the theatre. (Is there something wrong with this though... I mean honestly, should I change?) I'm glad though that I have this site and we can all talk about what we love together and no one will think we are weird! =)

Thanks for posting guys!

Having said that, I am always ready and willing to talk. So PM/IM me whenever you like. re: Searching for other lonely theatre nerds

re: Searching for other lonely theatre nerds

I love theater too, but I'm a realtive newcomer to it (although I don't live all that far from NYC), I only started seeing shows last June. No one around here is very interested, and whenever I tell someone about a show, they get this glazed look over their eyes, and say "uh huh", but you can tell thery're clueless!! lol Sometimes I do it deliberately just to see that look.. :) "Wicked" to them is "Evil", "Hairspray" is Final Net, "La Cage" is something on the menu at a French restaurant, and "Spamalot" is overstock in the canned meat aisle!!! Oh well. Welcome to my life (sigh)
