It was three smaller musicals. It was VERY different. I have to be honest, I didn't warm up to it until the second act. I liked all of the music though, very much.
The first part is a Japanese setting, and Idina going to be with her 'lover' for the last time, and in the end she kills him.
The second part is about a rapist (Aaron Lohr) that talks Marc's character into going to dig up some money, he knocks him out and ties him up, and then rapes Idina's character, then kills Marc. It's the investigation with all of them. They all claim to be telling the truth. You see the murder from many different perspectives (aka.. see what i wanna see...). Idina sings the title song in this part.
The third part, the opening to the second act, is the same as the opening to the first act. This time it's sung from Marc's point of view, and he kills Idina at the end.
I didn't fully understand how all the parts connected until the end of the fourth part. It's about a priest (aka Henry Stram) and he says there are going to be a number of miracles that will happen, and this is all the prove that there is no God. Idina seduces the priest, heh. Aunt Monica (aka Mary Testa) is an athiest that completely denounces god in the song The Greatest Practical Joke. When the priest says the miracle is going to happen, he sees it. No one else does, everyone else is mad at him, but he is absolutely amazed at what he saw. (another instance of see what i wanna see.)
The cast was superb. Marc can really fill a room with his voice. Idina wasn't belting his brain out, that was a nice change. Mary Testa was amazing, and funny. Henry Stram? Where is he from?! He was great! And Aaron Lohr was awesome, I'd only known that he was in Bare, but I'd never seen him perform in anything. I was very impressed.
So, this is how I made sense of all three parts. The first parts of each act, were from each of the lovers perspectives, and each of them saw/experienced something different. The second part, Idina's character admits that she "sees what she wants to see," and we see different perspectives again. The third part is obviously the priest seeing the miracle, when no one else does. And deep down, it might've been what he wanted to see and still believe that there was a God.
So, this is a deep, deep, heavy musical. I wouldn't recommend it for anyone under 16. When I keep thinking about it, it's more and more amazing. I'm SO happy a cast recording is being made.
There were two insane girls wearing home-made "I <3 Idina" shirts and red track pants. One of the band members came out and looked at them and said, "Sorry! I'm not Idina!" One of them was carrying a copy of WICKED, another one was wearing a Defy Gravity shirt, and one of them was heard saying, "omg, this has kristin on it, but do you think she'll sign it anyway?!"
The Idina-freaks were really good when she came out, I'll admit. They didn't screech when she came out. We were told we had to ask permission for a picture, wtf? Who doesn't? So, we waited, and she went by the tweens REALLY quickly and they re-located to the side and started hyperventilating.
The Public employees had to escort her to her taxi when she was done signing autographs. Sad, no?
All in all. AMAZING SHOW. GO SEE IT.
