This show went through many lives... Have you seen any productions that seem to have really "gotten it"?

I have performed this show with a youth theater -- for the most part, I think that's where it plays best (of course there are exceptions). It's a fun show, the score is infectious, it has a great message for kids, the Jr. version "works" -- so settings where it can be geared toward them are where it works best, IMO.

I've co-directed this a couple of times with my partner and I do think it lends itself to kids too. Of course, we did the junior version also.
Doesn't have to be that way, mind you, but every time Jojo and Horton would sing "Alone in the Universe," it would bring emotion to my eyes. Their being kids really made it special.

Not hiding my bias even a little bit but I just worked on it at Gallery Players in Park Slope and I'm so proud of the work the director/cast did.

I saw pictures and it looked incredible! Can you say anything about the interpretation they took?

I agree that the Jr version works better than the Full length. Too much going on it that!
When I was considering doing the show, my director network encouraged me with...It's not a great show, but you will have a BLAST working on it. Truer words never spoken. The kids, the adults....just so much fun.
But the summer be we put it up, my family was on vacation and the local theater did the full length....And I was WORRIED. UGH.
If we're not having fun, then why are we doing it?
These are DISCUSSION boards, not mutual admiration boards. Discussion only occurs when we are willing to hear what others are thinking, regardless of whether it is alignment to our own thoughts.

Basically it was show within a show, a boy (Jojo) walks into a theater while a rehearsal is going on and the actors put on the show for him. It was a much darker take but so creative and a joy to watch every day.

The original production had the dubious honor of being over-produced and under-written. The revival was more successful, though David Shiner's presence could not be replicated.

I could go for a revival of this show. I think some new more jazz oriented orchestrations and a great cast and director could bring a spark to this show. I think the show could use some more rewrites and maybe this time they'll get it right.
I think Broadway always needs a family show that can inspire young people. With Matilda closing I think that there's enough room for a new kids show. I would rather see Dr. Seuss thrive over Spongebob.
