In my mind, he's only miscast in the sense that both of the men who played him previously on Broadway (Jack Cassidy and Howard McGillin) were more obviously sleazy plus they were baritones. I think as an actor he makes perfect sense, though I won't be seeing the show til next month so I can't be sure til then.
