Sheffield to Come to the New Victory Theatre

The musical version of The Full Monty is returning to the London stage for the first time since its West End debut in 2002, running for a month at the New Players Theatre from 3 December 2009 to 2 January 2010 (preview 2 December) .

The musical is based on Peter Cattaneo's hit 1997 film The Full Monty, although the story about out of work steelworkers is transplanted from Sheffield to the American city of Buffalo, New York. It was first seen in San Diego, California, before opening at Broadway's Eugene O'Neill Theatre in October 2000, where it ran for 770 performances.

Adam Bayjou - who sings the two songs from my show AFTER THE TURN in the current A STAGE KINDLY concert, BRAVO, in London - is in the cast of this new production of THE FULL MONTY. And he is fantastic!

POL, your getting your Broadway and West End mixed up.
The New Players is in London and the New Victory is in New York!

Yeap, you are right, I did get my venues mixed up, which is a good think as I know nothing about both theatres, I have not seen anything staged there, perhaps you can fill me in more mama on these 'churches of culture'?

re: Sheffield to Come to the New Victory Theatre

The New Players Theatre (under the arches near Embankment tube station) is a lovely quite intimate theatre. It's where Jason Robert Brown did his last two series of fantastic concerts accompanied by a group of West End Divas as guest stars. Also, last year the William Finn revue MAKE ME A SONG was staged there.

I don't know too much about the history of the theatre though - but I'm sure Mama has all the appropriate info!

re: Sheffield to Come to the New Victory Theatre

This musical has absolutely nothing to do with Sheffield.

Sheffield only locates itself in great theatre such as The History Boys (which I hated but that's besides the point).

re: Sheffield to Come to the New Victory Theatre

The New Players theatre replaced a wonderful old music hall theatre that used to be in the same building. That was sadly lost when Charing Cross was redeveloped in the late 80s and 90s. The new theatre is a great performance space but sadly the music hall presentations are very few and far between theses days.

Cheers Mama.

How big is the New Players theatre please?

And is the New Victory Theatre, New York, the one behind the Hilton Theatre is a off Broadway house?

re: Sheffield to Come to the New Victory Theatre

I totally agree Phantom. Quite how this mediocre musical has come to be associated with Michael Grandage's stomping ground and the place that will either make or break Daniel Evans' career is beyond me.

I couldn't even point to Buffalo on the score of 42nd Street, let alone a map.

I have to say that, though it's not great, The Full Monty musical is far from mediocre. I actually enjoyed it far more than the original movie, which bored me to tears. Terrence McNally's book is a great piece of writing IMO. And there are some excellent songs in Yazbeck's score.

And as for Buffalo on a map LOL - it's in northern New York state, the gateway to Niagra.

Yep POL, its the one smack next to the spooked Hilton Theatre. It is a home for childrens theatre. Many years ago it was a first run movie theatre.

And here is the delightful New Players theatre underneath the arches at Charing Cross.

re: Sheffield to Come to the New Victory Theatre

"So why are not both theatres part of the West End/Broadway scene?"

Basically - seating capacity. Theatres classed as "Broadway" houses have to have a minimum seating capacity of 500 seats. The West End does not have such a rigid rule but the New Players is certainly small and intimate enough to be a Fringe house rather than West End.
