MARAT/SADE ......
Much easier than the official title "The Persecution And Assassination Of Jean-Paul Marat As Performed By The Inmates Of The Asylum Of Charenton Under The DIrection Of The Marquis De Sade" ...
Or the acronym TPAAOJPMAPBTIOTAOCUTDOTMDS.
Thank you, PJ (and orangeskittles). If you spend part of every day at web sites like this one then those initials may automatically tell you exactly which show is being discussed. I'm not a regular visitor but I am interested in theatre and I do like to come here every week or so. I can never figure out most of the initials used. Even old, common ones like H2$ confuse me.
"I'm sure people will be using LND in a few months when referring to Love Never Dies. Or I guess the more precise version is P:LND."
I don't think this will happen (and I sincerely hope it doesn't). I don't like POTO either. We have "Phantom" and I think "Phantom 2" will be coming.
The only problem with that, Mamie, is that Phantom is a separate show from Phantom of the Opera.
I know that. But when discussing shows that one wants to see or anything to do with the current choices, "Phantom" means the fellow at the Paris opera. I don't know anyone who makes the mistake of confusing them.
I don't usually use them on the boards, but in real life, I call Phantom of the Opera PotO, simply because I rant about my hate for it often, my friends are sometimes confued, though, because it sounds like I am saying PodO. I don't use many others, if any.
It's pronounced "Phan-tom"
Too bad I wasn't talking to you, Mamie. My question was pretty clearly directed at Edna.
I say "Poh-toh." But sometimes when I'm talking quickly, it comes out as "Poh-doh."

Well...so glad there was only one Tale or ATOTC, and everyone knew exactly what it meant...:)

I'll never forget those great shows of the 60's -- TEOGROMITMM AND ODPDMHYITCAIFSB. But my favorite musical remains AFTHOTWTTF.
So I guess I AM showing my age. I find the initials to be about lazy self absorbed people. I can't be bothered opening their subject lines up much less reading anything they have to say. Life is too short to type out a title? Then life is too short to offer you any credibility.

Which version of SP do you prefer? The R&H, the K&E, or the W&K?
My opinion on the initials is that I won't use them unless they go memetic- meaning, unless they become prevalent enough that EVERYONE knows specifically which one it is. There's no confusion over N2N, POTO, TLK, BATB. If it's at all vague or not obvious, it's not gonna be remembered as long as the show is. But as long as there's Next to Normal, there will be N2N.

darquegk, I never figured out what "POTO" stood for--I had to ask. For a while, I thought that "BATB" was Batboy. And I can't figure out what "TLK" stands for. I think it's much easier to just abbreviate titles by words instead of initials. When I say "...Forum", I think it makes a lot more sense than "AFTHOTWTTF"--and it took my less time to think of how to abbreviate it.

So are we just going to pretend this thread wasn't bumped by a post shilling anal beads?
