Should "Stage Dooring" Be Required?

"Honey if the sense of entitlement you exhibit in this thread is any indication of what would be waiting for me outside the stagedoor, I would definitely leave by another exit."
I second that emotion. You're crazy if you think actors owe you anything once you leave the stage. Enjoy the show, go home, and find your fulfillment & happiness in life from something other than an autograph or picture.

The first time I ever had the opportunity to leave through a stage door in NYC as a performer, I had a panic attack because of the amount people right in front of me. I have severe anxiety when it comes to crowds and I'm claustrophobic, too. There was not enough room between the door and the people waiting for a bigger star for me to gain my composure. It's been five years since that happened and I've yet to leave right when a show ends through the stage door again.
What I'm getting at is you don't know why certain actors choose not to greet people at the stage door. An autograph is not a right, it's a privilege, and one you should be grateful to receive. No one on that stage owes you anything beyond their performance.

OK, I recently did the whole stage door thing for the first time. A friend was in from out of town and really wanted to get the autographs after the show, so I went along for the ride.
Actually, I kind of felt bad for the stars because the line only had like 4 people waiting. Admittedly, it was a cold night, but still only 4 people wanted to wait for an autograph. With that said, I can say that the two leads of the show were unbelievably generous to the four of us standing there and talked for over 10 minutes and ended up answer all kinds of dumb questions (are you scared flying? Was it hard memorizing the lines? etc.).
While I don't plan on doing this again any time soon, I definitely don't think this is a right. If you're lucky enough to get someone to autograph a playbill for you - good for you. If not, that's life.

No. It shouldn't be required. Like trentsketch said you never know why someone isn't at the stagedoor. They could simply be tired or just not enjoy that kind of thing. You want someone to overwhelm themselves because you want a picture and an autograph? Please. It is always nice to have these people that you may admire's autographs but just because they are performer's doesn't mean they like to stagedoor. It is a privilege and not a right.
When I go to shows and choose to stagedoor after, of course I hope the people I really want to see come out, but it is not the end of the world if they don't. Atleast I got to see them perform.

It has entertainment value

Posted: 3/31/11 at 6:15pmThese people are performers. Their job is to perform and entrain the audience. If the choose to engage with the audience at the sthe door, that's fine. If nit, that is their choice. It really frustrates me when people accuse actors of being "entitled" and "selfish" for not coming out at the door (yes I have heard and read people saying these things). As some others have said, you never know what may be going on with their life off the stage, and sometimes they have reasons for not coming out at the stage door.

The City Council should pass a law making stage-dooring illegal, with fines of $125 for a first offense and $500 and $1000 for 2nd- and 3rd-time offenders. Multiple offenders should be shot on sight, by armed house managers and stage doormen.
Stage-dooring is a menace to society and its practitioners should be reformed or destroyed.
