I mostly lurk, but you should absolutely be here as long as it's something that makes you happy. If it stops making you happy or being something you enjoy, then take a break and step away. Life's too short to spend on chat boards that don't bring you pleasure. Er, bad phrasing, but you know what I mean.

And I would take an awful lot of what you read with a grain of salt. Yes, several people on here work in the NY theatre community, but some people exaggerate their knowledge and connections. And yes, some are a bit bitchy and have knee jerk reactions to things. It comes with the territory of a chat board and is easy to shrug off once you get to 'know' the various people. Please try to remember, we've all been you at some point in our lives. Personally, I love seeing someone young who is interested in theatre and feeds that interest. It's an awesome reminder of everything I love about the theatre world.

Alex, in my personal opinion, you belong here much more than a certain individual whose posts are almost always overwhelmingly negative. You can obtain a lot of information about upcoming shows and also have an outlet for your love of theater.

while i'm slightly judging op for choosing Wicked as their first show on Broadway

Why? So you can decide who gets to sit at your lunch table at school? My first Broadway show was Les Miserables in 1988 when I was in high school. I've also seen Wicked on Broadway as well as the tour and Chicago productions. So what?

Alex,

Don't forget that you can post about more than Broadway here, despite the site name. On the off-topic board we discuss movies, tv shows, books, politics (beware :)) and dozens of other topics.

The Big Brother/Survivor/Amazing Race threads are always fun and friendly. AHS 6 starts tomorrow and I'm sure there will be a thread that will end in tears for everyone. See a good (or bad) movie this weekend? Let us know about it.

If you feel nervous about diving into posting on the main board right away then the off-topic stuff good be a good way to get to know some posters and share your opinions about some non-theater shared experiences.

Marie: Don't be in such a hurry about that pretty little chippy in Frisco. Tony: Eh, she's a no chip!

And in that there is an object lesson for Alex: humor (as well as sarcasm, irony, and other intentions) sometimes gets lost here. And sometimes the result has the power to offend. Other times, of course, the offense is intentional.

Alex, I respectfully suggest YOU decide where YOU belong and don't depend on public opinion polls--especially if you want to someday work in the theater, which, as a business, isn't particularly welcoming to anybody. (As opposed to personally. I think you'll find most individuals in the arts are mutually supportive most of the time. Far more supportive than some threads here might suggest.)

That being said, we were all 18 at some point and lots of us don't have Sondheim on speed-dial. I haven't been to a show in NYC in over 20 years, but since I joined here I find I see far more shows in Southern California because I have read about them on this board.

Some people...

Some people only participate in theater chat boards because they are obsessed with a particular show or actor. Some people actually work in theater (lots of different professions here) and some just love the theater. All are welcome. And, yes there are people who get nasty or like to snipe but that is true of any kind of social media or social networking site.

You'll figure it out after hanging out on the boards for a while. Meantime, enjoy and, if you have a question, ask. Not everyone will be kind or understanding but that's life, right? There are plenty of people who WILL be, so it does balance out in the long run!
