It DID make me wish I'd seen Caroline, or Change
I thought the exact same thing. I'm going to have to order that recording

Posted: 10/24/07 at 12:23amI just got this DVD from Netflix and thought it was rather enjoyable. The extras were absolutely fantastic. However, it did not bring tears to my eyes like "Broadway: The Golden Age" did. Now that doc is a true treasure.

No great shakes, but good fun nonetheless.
And how cute is Jeff Marx? I just wanna give him a one-man cuddle party!

Posted: 10/24/07 at 12:15pmI didn't want an in-depth commentary on any controversies, but if they were going to mention them, then they should have at least described what they were about. You can't introduce something and not follow up on it. Some of these were big issues, such as Avenue Q's Tony Campaign and the Rosie/Raul feud. These weren't small gossip items. Why gloss over them? They were more interesting than watching Jeff Marx watch his show get nominated.

The real surprise of the documentary is the reminder that no one was sure WICKED would make it. The reviews were not great, they lost the important Tony's ... and yet it overcame all that to become this massive juggernaut.
Much like Les Miz 20 years earlier.

I really like the doc and enjoyed it even more a second time. I'll be discussing it in depth on my blog soon (if anyone is interested), but put me down as liking it a lot.
What exactly happened between Rosie and Raul Esparza? I thought it was just Boy George/Rosie drama, which was expected.

Les Mis won several awards including best musical. So how is that like Wicked?
And I enjoyed the movie as well but it felt like it could have used more focus. It seemed to skim over so much material for the year.

I was interested enough watching it, and thought it was well done.
One thing stood out glaringly though... both the bitchy (truly irritating) critics at that table, and the documentary's entire "point" itself, seem to say that "rave reviews" and "a Tony win for Best Musical" are what it's all about for a musical. Without them, your show is dead.
...and they're completely wrong now. Wicked got neither, and is the biggest hit on Broadway in the past 10 years.
And they never bothered to correct themselves, or to point out that they were and are, now and forever, WRONG in saying you can't make it without critical praise and a Best Musical Tony win.
The truth? Broadway audiences care less and less each year about those bitchy, lousy critics lording over absolutely no one at their self-important table, and that ONE BIG TONY NIGHT that the documentary keeps leading us up to with great anticipation.
Average people generally don't CARE anymore about either.
And the documentary should have pointed that out, in the end.
It is kinda lame when the film's main point is undermined by truth.

I just watched this. I loved it so much, for one major reason.
The time it takes place, the '03-'04 season, I was around 11 or 12 (16 now). It makes me just wish I could go back in time and see these shows, like "Caroline, or Change". I mean, I started appreciating Broadway probably around '05 and since then, haven't really looked back. I haven't really payed attention to the shows that made such a great impact but didn't last that long. This film made me appreciate them so much more, and want to explore Broadway (past present, and future) even further from now on.
