Show Clips: In the Heights with Corbin Bleu

I saw Marcy live and though I thought her singing was okay, I agree that she does not make Vanessa very charming or likeable.
Jimmy, what are you doing here in the middle of the night? It's almost 9 PM!

My main concern after watching the clips is Corbin Bleu's lack of an accent. When he said, "Que paso?...Y tu lo sabes" in "It Won't Be Long Now," I didn't believe for a second that his character grew up in a heavily Spanish-speaking environment. As an actor, he ought to work on developing that accent.

On another note, why do people dislike Marcy? I saw her live when she first went into the show, and I had no problems with her. She is not as drop dead gorgeous as the script describes Vanessa, but her voice and acting are absolutely fine.

I noticed the not-so-great Spanish pronunciation as well. :/

Whoever said you could tell he was having the time of his life--I completely agree, and man, what a difference that makes in a performance. I thought he was adorable. Charming, sweet, genuine. Reminded me how much I enjoyed this show when I saw it last year. I wouldn't be opposed to a trip back. Who is taking over for Robin de Jesus when he leaves for La Cage? I adore him and can't wait to see him in La Cage@

Marcy's voice is very strong, she is just wrong for the role-

Corbin, on the other hand, is just about PERFECT !!

He is so good !!!

Have to admit, his performance kind of shocked me. Thought he would be decent- I was VERY impressed !

The one time I saw Marcy, I thought she was fine. I loved Karen Olivo in the role though. Haven't heard great things about Nina Lafarga as Nina. I forgot just how joyous this show was since I haven't seen it since Lin Manuel's final performance.

I didn't realize that Seth Stewart joined the tour.

Vanessa isn't a meaty role, though. The basic requirements are a strong belt, a pretty face and good body, and the ability to flirt. The character is underdeveloped; we know Vanessa dreams of a better life and she has an alcoholic, possibly abusive mother. That doesn't give an actress much to go off. That's why I think Marcy is just fine in the role, aside from not having the right look for Vanessa. So how is Marcy wrong for the role?

Vanessa has a certain attitude about her that should be displayed in songs like "It Won't be long no" and "Carnival del Barrio". Marcy doesn't do that. She try's to make the character all fun loving and it really isn't that type of character. At least I think so. Also, in songs like "No me diga reprise" and "Champagne" I think that you see the true side of Vanessa come out but with Marcy it just seems so bland and like Vanessa doesn't really care.

I saw Janet go on for Vanessa. I was surprised but open to the idea of having her in that role. Janet is not a belter but she did do the role justice. She hit the notes, albeit not as powerfully. I think she was better than Marcy.

Warning walked by the stage door after the matinee today and it was a complete mob scene. I could barely walk by... Guess Corbin does have a large fan base ( I feel so out of the loop). Side note: he was adorable when I caught a glimpse of him.

I saw the show last night. Corbin blew me away. What a natural up there! I was so impressed by what he did.

Also, I have to give a shout out to Gabrielle Ruiz who was on as Nina. LAst time I saw it, I was so let down by Nina Lafarga. Gabrielle played Nina wonderfully, with beautiful vocals to match.

I was surprised by Marcy. This was my first time seeing her (as when I had the Nina understudy, I also had Krysta Rodriguez as Vanessa). She's no Karen, but I did like her performance more than the video previews show. Her voice came across more pleasant than on this.

But Corbin ROCKS. I'm a fan Show Clips: In the Heights with Corbin Bleu

I've seen Krysta, Mandy, Janet and Gabrielle as of Thursday and I think Gabrielle is my favorite Nina. She really blew me away. Though that might change after I see Courtney!Nina tomorrow or Tuesday.
