I have to admit, the wedding thing was a weird staging choice. I just choose to look at Hugh Jackman and ignore that.

I thought the movie was horrid. Shriley and Gordon were fine...I liked the Ado Annie. But Jud and Ali were horrible.

Anyone know where "Boys And Girls Like You and Me" was suppose to go?

Actually, I finally saw the movie of Kiss Me Kate last night, and I have to say the songs aren't half as well-integrated as those in Oklahoma!. I mean, it's fun in a Cole Porter kind of way, but if it's to be judged as a book musical it doesn't quite hold up.

I remember the Gordon McRae/Shirley Jones movie when I was much younger - but that didn't impress me as much as CAROUSEL did, also with the same screen leads.

I learned to love OKLAHOMA! ( and discovered why it was the landmark American musical) much later.

In 1999 I saw the RNT revival in London -- and since the release of the Region 2 DVD, I have watched it very often inspite of its length.

It should be required watching for all high school kids - a great slice of Americana and quintessential Rodgers and Hammerstein music!

MagicToDo - I felt the same about Oklahoma. I had kind of dismissed it as a cheese-fest until I actually did the show and realized how brilliantly it was structured. It's definitely my favorite R&H show. I liked the revival, but I thought they were a bit off the mark in a couple of places. Laurie was played a bit too tomboyish, which didn't make much sense for Many A New Day and Out of My Dreams. And I did not like the changes in the scoring for the dream ballet and The Farmer and The Cowman at all. The scenic design was beautiful, however.

And yes, Laurie is something of an airhead. She is a naive farm girl whose biggest conflict is choosing an escort for the Box Lunch Social. The story is pure melodrama, but the show is more about the setting than the story. It wasn't until Carousel that R&H honed in their focus on the story and characters (the setting was changed considerably from it's source film, Liliom).

OKLAHOMA! inspired Patrick Wilson's biggest fan (sorry, beacon, you only THINK it's you) to come to Broadway and see him perform in person. Since then I've visited five times and spend more money than I care to think about on shows. It also brought me to broadway websites where I've met the most wonderful people.

One of the local high schools just presented OK! and while it was enjoyable, I missed Andrea Martin and Schuler Hensley.

Hugh Jackman isn't too shabby in the DVD recording either.

oklahoma! is great!! i really like it in terms of classic musicals.

i was laurey, it was so fun! it helps to have a cute curly....it makes the "people will say we're in love a lot easier" hahaha.

but in all seriousness, i really do like oklahoma, as long as it's done right...i've seen some pretty...interesting spins on it!!!! and the ballet HAS to be fabulous.
