Show Some love For "Oklahoma"

We're doing it and I don't care what some people say..it is one of the best muscials ever written. Beautiful score, witty dialogue and opportuntiy to show some amazing dances.

While I didn't think the revival was all that great, if you stick to it's traditional staging, it soars.

The revival of Oklahoma! was the show that got me back into theatre after a few years of being sort of lukewarm to it all. I needed to see another show that I fell in love with, and corny as it is, that was the one. I thought the revival was gorgeous, actually, but to each his own. I'm a big fan... it's one of my favorite shows.

A work of art is an invitation to love.

Ooooooklahomaaaaa! Yeow!

I love Oklahoma! It isn't my favorite Rodgers and Hammerstein piece (that would be South Pacific), but it's definetely up there. Respect for what it did for the musical theatre world aside, I still think it's a wonderful show. I just watched the DVD with Hugh Jackman yesterday, which provoked me to watch the VHS with Shirley Jones, which provoked me to watch Broadway: The American Musical Part III, and the archive footage of the original Broadway production with Alfred Drake. *sigh* It's such a great show.

Shirley Jones had the most lovely voice in that. I've always had a thing for sopranos!!

i love "oklahoma!" What many people dont know is that the official name has the "!" in it.

great show. very funny. i hated the tour that is going around now tho. it was quite a dissapointment.

I second that, Tenor. Shirley is one of my all-time favorite singers.

Joan Roberts is still my favorite Laurie. I love her "Many a New Day."

The show overall has aged beautifully, except for some of Ali Hakim's schtick. It's still a spot-on example of how to integrate song, dance, and dialogue into a coherent (and entertaining) whole. And out of all new things in the Nunn revival, "The Farmer and the Cowman" is my favorite. What a number- makes me wish I could dance. :)

And I can't forget Gordon MacRae riding into view on his horse and singing in that glorious baritone, "There's a bright golden haze on the meadow".....

anyone with a beautiful voice can consider me their slave.

I agree with Emcee...the revival got me back into bway. It was such a good production. But then again, this show is such a classic that it deserves to be in that style...

And, it is one of my faves too! oklahooooooooooooooooma. Yaow!

The OKLAHOMA! revival was uniformly excellent. I really, really loved this show. It was an excellent production.

Shirley Jones Rocks.....beautiful to look at, beautiful to hear, she's a class act all the way and is one of the reasons I ever watch "Oklahoma".

I think this show is a classic, but i'm lukewarm to it. i saw the revival, and realized that i just really dont like curly and laurie. I have to fall in love with characters to like a show, and i just found those two to be sort of egotistical and stupid characters. Just a thought.

Love the score and it gives some great opportunity for dances, but I'm lukewarm to the book. There are a few scenes in it that I enjoy, but overall the book is what brings the show down for me. My favorite R & H musical is most definately "Carousel" (despite "June is Busting Out all Over"). But the revival of "Oklahoma" I thought was very nice, wonderfully done.

The CD of the original cast of Oklahoma! was the first compact disc I bought after finally purchasing a CD player in 1993. I wanted to buy something old to really know how much improved the sound would be. It was thrilling. I thought Alfred Drake was in the room with me!

I think the revival was genius... granted I had only ever seen the movie, not the original production, but I can't even imagine having to watch different actors do the dream ballet??? what were they thinking! revival all the way...

I love Oklahoma! so much. We're doing it for my senior year (two years) and I'll be Laurey, my one friend, Abby, is going to be Ado Annie, and my other friend Katie is going to be Aunt Eller.

We only know this because we've got the director whipped.

But it's a beautiful production. I watch the London Cast with Hugh Jackman weekly. Just because I love the whole cast.

I love the entire cast of Oklahoma! London revival version. I think they are just great, and each carries themselves immesely well. I love the part of Ado Annie... she is one of the roles I would want and love to play in the future.

Love the revival! And Hugh Jackman and the rest of the cast... though I don't like Laurey's voice that much. I don't think it quite fits the stamina of the rest of the characters in the London revival.
But still... love Oklahoma! ~kangaroo

Oklahoma! is brilliant from start to finish. I think it's gotten a bad rap by some over the years because it's an easy show to screw up. It's written in such a specific dialect, yet some STILL can't make it sound right.
Plus, there are overtones to it, both dramatically dark and playfully sexual (have you READ the Curly/Laurey dialogue?)
And no, the revival wasn't the first production to "discover" these. They've been there all along - they're just easy for inexperienced directors to miss.

If you play "Oklahoma!" with right intention and search the characters; you'll find its a brilliant piece of theatre. It's one of my favorite shows and more times than not it is butchered beyond believe. Cutting the ballet should be banned. Trimming perhaps; if you don't have the dancers, but I've seen many productions that cut it altogether. One director I worked with said it was just filler. I soon left the production team. What a great American musical!!

What is there for me to say about "Oklahoma!"? It's the show that first got me interested in musical theatre. Did the title number for an elementary school variety show and my mom made me watch the movie... little did I know it would jumpstart my love of Broadway. Besides that, I've got very strong personal ties to this show - "People Will Say We're in Love" and "Oh, What a Beautiful Morning" were both played at my grandmother's funeral. The former makes me cry. Well, there's my two cents. "You're doin' fine, Oklahoma!"

it's a great show...a bit overdone and a bit long..but still CLASSIC!

OKLAHOMA! is a great show until it starts taking itself serious in the second act. The music almost stops after "Lonely Room" and the dialogue becomes lethal. Why isn't there musical underscoring during Curly's fight with Jud? In the recent revival, the staging of the title song was ludicrous, with a wedding reception being pantomimed while the lyrics were about the Oklahoma territory becoming a state. It became laughable.
