Hi -- first time poster, long time lurker.

Coming to NYC for a long weekend in mid-May. Hoping to see at least two, possibly three shows while in town. Was initially thinking one musical, one play but given the vast number of outstanding plays onstage right now, I'm re-thinking that. Have already seen Network (in February) and found it fascinating. What would your recommendations be for the best two-three shows, musical or play, to see in mid-May? Thanks for all your advice and info in advance!

I highly recommend To Kill A Mockingbird. Extremely difficult ticket of course, but they do offer rush and from what I have personally seen it isn't too long. Not sure where seats are though. If you're up for it, The Ferryman is a fantastic drama, and tickets are fairly easy to get right now. What The Constitution Means To Mean just opened to raves as well. Burn This seems to be good too. So many options for plays!

For musicals, Hadestown seems to be the consensus "Event" for musicals this season. I haven't seen it but plan to at some point. If you're looking for an upbeat, hilarious, and heartwarming musical I really recommend The Prom. Tickets would be easy to get and its such a fun show!

Enjoy your trip!

Hadestown for sure.  Buzz is strong for Tootsie and Oklahoma, too.   Perhaps All My Sons (not sure when that starts), Gary: A Sequel to Titus Andronicus (It's odd) or Burn This?

If we're not having fun, then why are we doing it? These are DISCUSSION boards, not mutual admiration boards. Discussion only occurs when we are willing to hear what others are thinking, regardless of whether it is alignment to our own thoughts.

Here's the thing. You're going to hear all sorts of recommendations and for the most part you can't go wrong.

The Ferryman was spectacular. I loved Mockingbird. I thoroughly enjoyed Tootsie and Kiss Me Kate. I want to see The Prom based on the recommendations here. I'm seeing Hadestown in a few weeks, also Ink, which opens in previews this week.

You're going to see a couple of great shows. The problem, of course, is choosing which ones.

You cant go wrong?   I agree that you won't find too much of a consensus -- but lots of people highly dislike lots of shows.  In fact, this year I've been pretty "blah" about almost everything I've seen.   And, not actually knowing the OPs likes/dislikes, it's hard to suggest more than the shows that seem to be crowd pleasers.

OP here -- I tend to like plays with some heft to them, both in writing, theme and performance, and musicals that are well-crafted and not treacly.

Thanks to all who've shared suggestions so far -- greatly appreciated!

She sounds smart about shows and was getting lots of good suggestions. That's what I meant by she can't go wrong.
