Bravo jennyish! :)
Looking at the things Timmer included, i figured that was the reasoning behind whoever said SITPWG.

The play, The Life and Times of Nicholas Nickleby (1981), had the Crummles theatrical troupe performing their re-written adaptation of Romeo and Juliet during one of its several acts. It was funny, all who died (except one) came back to life so they could offer a happy ending. The troupe broke into song at the end of the scene bidding farewell to Nickolas and his friend Smike when they had to leave. The Crummles troupe, as well as being joined by the rest of the cast, also ended the act by singing 'England Farewell, join in the chorus (etc)' from on their set. i'll never forget it. NN wasn't a musical, but the music it did contain, was soaring (and came out with an LP at the time).

The Scarlet Pimpernel: SP2-SP4;
The introduction to the whole show is "Storybook" where Marguerite is at her "theatre club"...the "Comedie Frences" or whatever. Of course they added Marie doing sets, etc.

well the corny collins show is a T.V show I wouldn't consider hairspray a show within a
show and timmer for a broadway fan I would think you would know all the songs from hairspay.

Oh yeah Pippin! funny how many there are when you think about it.
and timmer, its "The nicest kids in town", "you cant stop the beat".
Also i was thinking maybe "A Wild Wild party" from the Lippa's Off Broadway musical The Wild party? The song is an extract from the new Broadway musical one of the characters in the party was writing- Good Heavens, i think. And they were performing it to ppl at the party. Show within a show?
Me and Juliet. If I remember correctly there is even a song where the audience of the show within the show gets to comment on the show they're watching.
Who can forget Wicked's Wizomania!

Not "stage shows", but nevertheless characters performing for other characters:
Super Trouper - Mamma Mia
Oom-Pah-Pah - Oliver!
Deep Into The Ground - Billy Elliot
I think we've lost track of what actually constitutes a "show within a show"
I dunno how SITPWG or an audition in L5Y is supposed to count as a show within a show. And "performances" like Oom-Pah-Pah and A Wild, Wild Party aren't done in a show within the story, they're just performed within the setting of the show.
I had almost forgotten about "Say, Darling" Interesting "show within a show" concept. Did anyone see it on Broadway?
Here's info from Wikipedia -
Say, Darling is a three-act comic play by Abe Burrows and Marian and Richard Bissell about the creation of a Broadway musical. Although the play featured nine original songs with lyrics by Betty Comden and Adolph Green and music by Jule Styne, all of the songs were presented as either rehearsal or audition material and not as the thoughts or feelings of the characters. The original 1957 Broadway production featured only two pianos, but RCA Victor released a fully-orchestrated original cast recording of the score, leading many to conclude that Say, Darling was actually a musical.
In a case of art imitating life not once, but twice, the show is an adaptation of Richard Bissell's semi-autobiographical novel of the same name which chronicled his experience adapting his novel 7½ Cents for The Pajama Game, making it in essence a play of a book about a musical adaptation of a book.
