If we are allowed to stray into opera, then there's Pagliacci, where the stage play gets too close to reality and the cuckolded clown murders his unfaithful wife.

Not really a show, but "Happy Endings" within "New York, New York" is a brilliant number. So, it's Liza Minnelli playing Francine Evans playing Peggy Smith.
