Show vs production. Where does the criticism lie. food for debate.

I just had a thought. When people return home from anight out at the theatre and they criticize what they didn't like about what they saw, what is their scenario? What is the show or the production?

you can have --

good show, bad production
bad show, bad production
bad show, good production
good show, good production

"Show" usually means the structure of the book and score that remain consistent no matter where it is produced. "Production" usually means the physical aspects including sets, lighting, cast, direction and other elements that could change from one performance to the next.

The current Rent on Broadway is a bad production of a good show.

Welcome back, Matt! Glad you had a good time.

And, of course, I'm going to disagree with you re: Show vs production. Where does the criticism lie. food for debate.

I would say that RENT is the good production of a good show executed badly.

Yes...semantics and all...but there you go.

Or perhaps, it's a bad production of a good show but we weren't able to tell how bad it was cause the original cast was so spectacular.

Glad you liked CAROLINE...I knew you would.

exactly... so many ways to look at it....

Guys and Dolls and carousel, in my opinion, are good shows... but I have seen many abad production. But when people see bad productions, they often make no distinction between show and production.....

reminds me of when Gypsy and Nine were against each other..

the going word was that:

Nine was a good production of a bad show

and Gypsy was a bad production of a good show.

I thought Nine was a brilliant production of an alright show

and Gypsy was a great production of a great show...
