So I saw rent in the movie theaters on wenesday, WOW, and I'm seeing it again today, it was that good. Powerhouse cast, great, band: It should be recorded. They never did get a cast recording for rent right, the OBC recording sounds very small and cheesy. Daphne Rubin-Vega has a great voice, live. Hearing her sing without you and I should tell you and all the slow songs just does not work at all. She sounds like a dying cow, but when it's live, you see all her emotion and expressions and it makes the songs click.
The Soundtrack for the movie had some new arrangements that were really strong, it sounded a lot bigger and rocked harder. Only two problems. Rosario dawson's singing voice mediocre, and have the songs are gone. It really takes away from the recording.
There has never been a recording for rent that got it right. I hope that they will come out with a recording for the Rent Live cinecast, that cast was on fire. If they can put it on a CD the way the out it in the movie theatres. It would be perfect What are some shows that you think should be ReRecorded, why, and what cast would you like to be recorded.
First one that comes to my mind was that I wish the Toronto/Broadway cast of Mamma Mia was recorded (Louise Pitre, Karen Mason, Judy Kaye). The London cast album is SOOOOOO underwhelming, with strange accents all over the place, dialog sequences sounding like they recorded them as an afterthought and just stuck them in there at different sound levels than the sung portions, and some changes from the stage version (I liked the part where the men picked up the beginning of the chorus in "Mamma Mia" right after Donna ran off).
I end up listening to the Movie version more, because the sound quality is great on that one, though they recorded it without any of the dialog, and some songs are different in the movie ("Take a Chance on Me"), and it generally presents the album as more an ABBA cover versions album, but it is generally still better than the London cast.
I'm going to second Mamma Mia! because I HATE the London recording, and the soundtrack is missing Under Attack which is hands down my fav song. Granted, I do have the ABBA verisons... but it's not the same!

Wicked... with Wicked Witch of The East and the dialouge in Defying Gravity... and a new cast. I'm hoping that Australian cast recording rumor is true.
I'm still fuming that they didn't record West End's "Hairspray." I like most of the cast better than the OBC recording or the film soundtrack. And although the world is certainly not lacking in recordings of "Les Miserables," I still wish they could have made a recording of the revival.
I would have loved to have had a recording of the US Saturday Night Fever. I know the show was not the best but I would have loved Orfeh's recording of If I Can't Have You.

i really wished they would've re-recorded the AIDA OBC... it REALLY REALLY REALLY bugs me that Adam Pascal sings "anonymous and gone to mow"... aaaaaargh...

Could someone explain to me why there isn't an OBC of MAMMA MIA!?
On the other hand, I too would have loved to listen to the London cast recording of HAIRSPRAY.
I would've loooved a Cast Recording of the OLC of Avenue Q. I enjoyed them so much more then the OBC.
I'm going to try to rip the RENT DVD when it comes out so if anyone wants a CR of the final cast let me know after it comes out.

Would someone please do a new recording of COCO?
There is some good music in that show but the recording stinks. Not only do we have Katherine Hepburn croaking her way through the score, but the whole recording sonds as if it were done in a tin can.
Send me PM called "RENT CR" so I can make a list & return the PM's when I have it.
Well, for me, first and foremost would be The Scarlet Pimpernel. Since so many changes were made to the score from the OBC to the final version we never got proper recordings of the new "You Are My Home" and it's reprise, "The Creation of Man" with the new dance break, "The Scarlet Pimpernel", the "Storybook" reprise, the "Into the Fire" reprise and the new finale.
Also Cats never got a complete, complete record every note of the score recording. There are three two disc English language recordings. One would think by the third time around they would have wanted to finally preserve the entire show, but alas... no.
The Phantom of the Opera never got one either, and Joseph really bugs me. I guess it needs to be on two CDs, but with all the recordings we have one would think you'd at least be able to pull songs from each to make a complete listen, but they pretty much just recorded and left out the same stuff every time.

Definitely Mamma Mia. When I first heard it I had so much trouble figuring out which dad was singing because of the accents.
I would love to hear a re-recorded version of Allegro. There (to my knowledge) is only 1 recording available, and it was recorded in the 1940s.
Also, I wish the newer cast of Big River a few years ago had recorded that album. My 1985 version is getting old to me.
And finally, I'd love to hear a new recording of Fiorello! Although the Original Cast Recording is pretty brilliant, I'd love to hear new voices.

I believe there's a fairly recent studio recording available of ALLEGRO. Somehow I think Patrick Wilson is in the cast.
Thanks for the note, Dolly. I'll keep my eyes open. But I haven't seen it or heard about it.

There is supposed to be an Allegro with Laura Benanti, Norbert Leo Butz and Patrick Willson. There's no release date though.

THE GOLDEN APPLE.
Complete for the first time. Why has this taken so long?
Oh, speaking of apples how about The Apple Tree? That and The Threepenny Opera. I can't believe the revivals went unrecorded.
Hasn't Threepenny had two unrecorded revivals? Sting's and now Cummings'. What's the record for that?
MAMMA MIA, This recording stinks, why why, did we release it!
Hilton McRae sounded like a deep voiced woman with laryngitis imo.
the Dialogue is over-dramatic.
"One of us" the girl playing Sophie sounded very angelic. Which surprised me since the other songs she sounds like a chipmunk.
The background chorus i felt like they overpowered Siobhan McCarthy's vocals.
"Does Your Mother Know" very plain compared to the song nowadays on Broadway.
Personally I would have called it OZR (Original Zombie Recording)
I guess a lot of recordings don't put in the emotions with the songs. Don't judge a show by it's OCR
