Shows That Should Be ReRecorded

Posted: 9/28/08 at 9:53amAdd me to the list of those who is very annoyed that a Hairspray OLCR hasn't been done. Also, I would have loved a Les Mis revival cast recording -- but the cast that included John Owen Jones.

Posted: 9/29/08 at 2:33pmSpring Awakening needs either a live recording or a re-recording with the Broadway lyrics and arrangements. The current recording is just unacceptable.

Posted: 9/29/08 at 3:01pmI agree that the MAMMA MIA London recording is just awful. I especially hate how all the background vocals and "techno" sound overwhelm the main actor's voices, especially during songs like "Super Trouper" and "Does Your Mother Know?" Wish they recorded an album with people who have appeared on Broadway, that way we could have Carolee Carmello, John Dossett, and Judy Kaye.

I agree with the Rent comments. The OBC is lacking energy. I saw Daphne live and she is great. The CD does not do her justice.
I also would like a Phantom - The Vegas Spectacular recording.
And lastly, I wish we had an Evita recording with all the new orchestrations. I have no idea why the 2006 recording was a selections only cd.

Posted: 9/29/08 at 7:11pmIt would also be nice to have a new recording of Camelot since we haven't gotten one in almost thirty years. I would have really liked one with Lou Diamond Phillips, but all we got were four promotional tracks which pisses me off because it sounds like they went into a studio. They probably could have recorded more songs with additional funding.

Posted: 9/29/08 at 8:41pmI wish they'd go back into the recording studio and try the current cast of South Pacific again. There is a recording of the sort that cannot be mentioned that is absolutely breathtaking. Just as it sounds when you watch it live. The CD though is very disappointing. I've tried to figure out exactly what the change is and I'm sure that Kelly O'Hara's performance in the recording studio is a good part of it. It's just lackluster and flat. It's such a fantastic cast that it's a shame they can't get a really good LEGAL recording of it.
A click for life.

Wicked with dialog and Wicked Witch of the East. Also with either Stephanie J. Block or Julie Reiber as Elphaba please
And a Les Mis Revival but only with Lea Salonga as Fantine. No Daphne for me.

Not re-recorded, but as for being recorded in the first place:
1) Next to Normal (Off-Broadway... PLEASE!!!!)
2) The Apple Tree (Revival)
I mean, gems like that are missed, but they release a soundtrack for "The 39 Steps"?? I mean, come on! It's a great show. But not a musical, my friends.
Yes, we desperately needed Original cast recordings of "Side Man" and "The Graduate" because I can't find Simon and Garfunkel's Mrs. Robinson anywhere else!

I have to agree that the "Spring Awakening" cast recording is slow, boring and both untheatrical and unradio. What were they going for? Or weren't they sure what they had? It doesn't make any sense.
As for old shows, "The Golden Apple" is a brilliant score, which you would have no clue about from the original cast recording, fascinating though it is.
There is a "Camelot" cast album with Richard Harris, originally on the old Varese-Sarabande. It's worth a listen.
But how's this for a surprising late entry (and a shocking one for some of my friends, I'm sure)--the Broadway version of "Starlight Express." There isn't one. The studio cast recording with El DeBarge DOES NOT count, and the two London recordings don't really reflect the show that was done here. For ALW compleatists, it would be nice to have. I'm just sayin'.

Posted: 9/30/08 at 4:43pmI like the OBCR's of RENT and Spring Awakening. I would like a re-recording of Altar Boyz. I stayed away from the show for a bit over a year because of the recording. Of course, once I saw the show, I loved it. It sounds so much better live.

Posted: 9/30/08 at 5:02pmWhen Louise was in Mamma Mia, I spoke with her and then wrote to the production company re: making a recording of that cast. They wrote back and said it wasn't going to happen because the London recording was THE recording and it wasn't practical to make two versions. I remember Louise being disappointed---I know I DEFINITELY was (and still am)----that was a great cast---and the vocals were strong and easy to understand. Too bad.

Posted: 9/30/08 at 5:13pmJudy Kaye got cheated out of her two best roles when "Phantom" and "Mamma Mia" didn't record their Broadway casts. I really feel bad for her. And of course she became famous replacing Madeline Kahn in "On the Twentieth Century," after the cast recording was made. Poor Judy!

I just thought of another one that should be re-recorded. As stated on the "Which Joseph Recording?" thread, I wish that the wonderful Sam Harris got to record "Joseph...Dreamcoat". He was excellent in the touring production. I know they probably didn't do it because at the time, there were three English language recordings of that production in print (the Donovan/Hately London cast, the Donny Osmond Canadian cast, and the Michael Damian Los Angeles cast) (and not to mention that I think the Laurie Beechman original cast and the 1973 studio recording was also in print), but hey, someone put up the money to record the recent Patrick Cassidy/Amy Adams tour, so why not? I wouldn't even mind if they just used the same backing tracks from one of those three versions.
I also think it's a shame that (even though it's my sister's and my favorite recording of "Joseph...") they milked the Jason Donovan recording so much. Decca released the remastered version (from Polydor), and then they re-released it again with only one Lee Mead (new reality show chosen Joseph) track and the horrendous new song for the Pharoah. I'm sure that they probably could have recorded a new album instead, but this one is not a big a loss in my book as the Sam Harris one.

Let's also re-record some of those wonderful Broadway flops!
All American, Gigi, Fanny and Bravo Giovanni are my four picks.
And could we PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE get a new recording of Where's Charley? The only one I own (or know about that's still around) is the 1958 London Cast. There was an excellent production in Williamstown about 6 or 7 years ago starring Christopher Fitzgerald, and how I wish they had recorded that! There were rumors of taking it to Broadway, but sadly, the producers thought it was too small for Broadway and too big for Off-Broadway.

Posted: 10/1/08 at 12:12amAs a major SA fan I agree please re-record. Even if it isnt the OBC the arrangements are meh and the lyrics are incorrect. The album doesnt capture the rock edge of seeing it live which is why I prefer the audios I have instead. And add me to the list of 3PO revival being recorded!
