Shrek Design
Shrek Design#1
Posted: 7/14/08 at 5:23pmI am very curious how this show will be done. I could see it being brilliant design wise. I am imagining how the makeup set and costume will be done. It could really be awesome. Unless of course they make it super complicated like little mermaid which looked more like an art gallery. Your thoughts?

Posted: 7/14/08 at 5:35pmThey were very careful about not giving a single thing away at the recent audience preview in Seattle. Even Chris Sieber got a nasty look from Jason Moore when he started to explain his costume as "a contraption."

Fiona wears a green tshirt (a la Flounder) and Shrek ears when she is an ogre. During the transformation, the shirt unfolds (a la Effie White) into a full-on Princess Fiona dress!
Just kidding

Posted: 7/14/08 at 5:49pmI wouldn't be surprised if they used magnets for Sutton a la LBB in Omigod you guys.

The book has been rewritten and now Fiona does not transform. They are borrowing this idea from The Little Mermaid.

Posted: 7/14/08 at 6:43pmI love me some Brian D'arcy James and think he's brilliant, but I just don't see how this is going to turn out well for him. I Just think he's gonna look a hot mess. But at least he'll sound good.

SPOILER...for those 1.5 of you who haven't seen the film...
I may be the only one who thinks this...but I felt the film Shrek suddenly cheapened when Fiona turned out to be an ogre as well. It's means so much more when they loved each other as they were.
So if the new changes are in effect it'll throw a nice twist in. :)
re: Shrek Design#12
Posted: 7/14/08 at 7:33pmI'm wondering how they are going to do the transformation, I imagine they will use a double or something.
re: Shrek Design#13
Posted: 7/14/08 at 7:38pmMaybe they'll do some trick like the Beast transformation from Beauty and the Beast.
re: Shrek Design#14
Posted: 7/14/08 at 7:43pmMagnets were not created by the costumer from Legally Blonde. And besides, Foster used them before in Drowsy...
re: Shrek Design#15
Posted: 7/14/08 at 9:31pmI do not know about the transformation but I know that Chris Sieber will vbe on his knees as Lord Faarquad. He told me that the costume is built up to his knees and he has thick knee pads he will were throughout the show.

I just love how after Wicked, anything with a green character has to be on Bway.
As if the only thing keeping Shrek and Young Frankenstein was broadway's prejudice against green people.

Magnets were not created by the costumer from Legally Blonde.
NO WAY!
re: Shrek Design#18
Posted: 7/20/08 at 3:12pmI don't think that shh282 was crediting the designer from LB with the creation of magnets in costumes, no need to attack, they were just offering an example.

Posted: 7/20/08 at 6:31pmyeah... i was thinking a beauty and the beast kinda thing... i mean transformation wise, it's very similar except that the beast turns in a human in beauty and the beast... lol
re: Shrek Design#21
Posted: 7/20/08 at 7:09pmI heard somewhere that the idea for the set design was trees that grow leaves as the show moves along and sets that are never stagnant.

Posted: 7/20/08 at 7:16pmMy question is, will Brian d'Arcy James have that moustache I've seen in pictures the last few months, or is he going to shave that off? (Because on a purely superficial level, I am not a fan.)

^ Heh, I'm pretty sure I saw that it was shaved off in those [tos] first preview pics. Thank the lord!
Who would play you in the movie? "Taye Diggs." --Brian d'Arcy James
