re: Shrek The Musical

I wasn't in a hurry to hear any of this, and after seeing a number from the show on The View last week I now have no interest in it at all. The number featured a fart/burping competition and for me that is just not entertainment.

ive seen this show and it was pretty dull, it has a few good numbers but the staging is awful, the cast are pretty good though

re: Shrek The Musical

I saw this show twice and I loved it both times. The first time I saw it was in previews. But, I loved it so much when I saw it then that it could have been frozen and I would have walked out of that theatre a VERY happy guy. However, I saw it again after it had opened and was blown away once again.

Keep in mind, that I was originally skeptic about a Shrek musical but I loved it.

And, I don't think that is fair to judge it based upon its performance on The View. I have often felt that shows that are on tv shows like that, no matter how good they are, often fall flat on their face when they try to to a big production number in a small space. I mean, whenever Wicked is on The Today Show they always do One Short Day, and that is a number that just doesn't work well in the small space that they have to perform in.

re: Shrek The Musical

I'll admit I've never seen the show live, but for some reason I think its the kind of show I'd love. I had the same reaction when I first "saw" Mary Poppins, and when I actually saw it live in the theatre I loved it. Am going in April (if its on TKTS in NYC while I'm there) so will let you all know how its getting on

re: Shrek The Musical

Live or bootleg dvd, the music is pretty weak, so i dont think that will make any difference.
The character of Shrek is very bland in this and doesnt really get any good songs (though i did like the end of act 1 song he had)

Lord whatever hes called was very funny and i have to admit that i was falling around laughing at his bits (his 1st song is brilliant). I liked Princess Fiona's 1st song with the 3 fiona's and Big Bright Beautiful world, but the rest of the score is massively bland.

Many of the jokes fall flat too, act 1 is especially unfunny though Act 2 is far better.
The gingerbread man is criminally under used as are a lot of the fairytale characters (the Chorus Line spoof was dreadful) and Donkey seems to have lost all his wit from the films.

The set (in my opinion) was ugly, i did like the stage revolves and they were used effectively but the rest of it (especially the bridge bit) were horrendous.

The cast are very good and giving it all they have, i love Brian as Shrek but i wish he had more to do, and some of the big names playing the fairytale creatures deserve so much more.

Its not a complete mess, some bits are good, like i say some songs are well written and some moments are funny, but as a 2 hour plus show it doesn't seem to come together very well, and as a show to rival disneys big shows like the brilliantly written Lion King and it doesn't come close (though its better than Tarzan and the Litlle Mermaid)

re: Shrek The Musical

It will be one of those recordings that will mean nothing on its own if you haven't seen the show.

re: Shrek The Musical

Is it me or does the quality of Tesori's music really vary with the commercial value of the show she does?

Violet - Not a big seller but a solid and interesting score
Millie - Sellout show, mediocre score
Caroline or Change - Noncommercial show, phenomenal score
Shrek - Sellout show, mediocre score

re: Shrek The Musical

Since when has farting and burping not been part of the entertainer's repertoire?

But surely not in a musical.

Mass murder and cannibalism - yes - but to reference Mr Sondheim again...

Please - don't fart.
There's very little air,
And this is art.

re: Shrek The Musical

Again, you have to see that farting scene in the context of the show. If you know the movie, you will know the scene.
What's the problem?

re: Shrek The Musical

Yeah its during the song I Think I Got You Beat where Shrek and Fiona start to compare who has had a worse life, the song then moves in to a serious of Fart and Burp noises as they have a 'Fart and Burp Off'

The songs alright but it still makes me cringe lol
