re: Shrek in trouble?

Shrek has an all-around amazing cast. I would definitely say it has one of the best altogether companies on Broadway, right up there with Gypsy (those four leads...) and In the Heights.

I know whatcha mean, Piragua Guy. I saw the two shows you just mentioned last summer and I was blown away by both of them.

I don't want to sound uneducated but I've always believed that it doesn't hurt business having a cast recording out.

The people I mentioned impressed me the most.

Sieber was my favorite, though. And the cookie. re: Shrek in trouble?

re: Shrek in trouble?

I totes completes agree with Corine.

It doesn't matter if the show is "good" or if the songs are "crap," people like Jennifer Cody, Jennifer Simard, Aymee Garcia, Ryan Duncan, John "Tags"-rhymes-with-"fruits" deserve a good job on Broadway, DESERVE a good job on Broadway! So buy tickets for all your friends because they deserve it!!!!!

re: Shrek in trouble?

Why so nasty, Evic? I wonder if you even saw the show. It has an entertaining score, skilful performances, great production values, good laughs for the children. It seems like some critics don't want any show aimed at families to even get close to Broadway. The ONLY show they recommended for families in the last 20 years was Lion King. It would have been tragic for parents with kids to have no other show to take them to for decades.

Eh, homeimp, critics will be critics. I have no patience with them, honestly.

What about Hairspray? Spelling Bee wasn't bad for kids either, and those are just examples from the last few years. Anyway, it isn't critics' fault if purveyors of "family" theater keep putting out mediocre crap. Try blaming producers who think they can slap a well-known children's movie title on anything and have credulous tourists come pouring in.

re: Shrek in trouble?

Well, with this latest tax increase, looks like Shrek is REALLY in trouble.

Yup, future's looking less than big, bright and beautiful.

Pbbbbt.

re: Shrek in trouble?

I went to buy tickets today using a Broadway Box discount expiring mid January

None of the dates were good .As I was walking away, the box office person told me the disount was extended to mid march. I got 2 for 2/7 1 St row rear mezzanine.

I saw Equus today & upstairs was about 90 % full but it was heavily papered. Stay away from the on stage seats. They are horribly located & you miss a lot of it.

re: Shrek in trouble?

Honestly, I don't think it will succeed, but I'm pretty sure it will struggle to the Tonys, lose and then close.

It'll get nominated only for the fact that there's not much brand new opening this season. But I'll throw up if it wins Best Score. The others must be really, really weak for it to win...

Lest we all forget 9 to 5 is said to be a great contender fot a lot of awards.

re: Shrek in trouble?

From the looks of things, I'd say the cast better start lining up auditions.

Are you people kidding? It's been open less then a week. Let's check if the carcass is dead before we start circling it, shall we?

It should get some word of mouth from the holidays.

DAMN people! Give it time! It has already proven that it's a good holiday seller. Let it walk on it's own.

They actually have a sign for premium tickets for $ 300 plus. High hopes or utterly deluded.

re: Shrek in trouble?

I don't think it is a want for the show to close, but more of a realistic look based on past and current trends. They struggled to find an audience in previews, only had one good week, reviews were mixed at best, and the economy is in the crapper.
#73

re: Shrek in trouble?

I find it gross how many posters who have been squealing about Broadway dying for months hoping for the demise of a perfectly good show. Like it or not, Shrek is one of the few hopes Broadway has left in this awful economy, and the last thing we need is one more expensive, high-profile show failing.

re: Shrek in trouble?

Again, the fact that it is failing doesn't mean we want it to. There are those on the board who are realistic about these things and those who live in denial about a production's inevitable closure. If Shrek were going to be a hit, it would've found an audience prior to its less-than-spectacular reviews.

re: Shrek in trouble?

This show wants to rely on touring families coming to NYC and willing to pay full price. It's exactly the failing economy that makes that plan kind of bad - there are a lot of shows competing for that "family" market right now, and The Lion King and Billy Elliot have better reviews and the former a long-standing reputation. Fewer families are going to be taking that big expensive trip to NYC in the near future. It's just too expensive. And on days like today I doubt locals want to go anywhere outdoors.
