Shrek in trouble?

Is there hope for Shrek what with the mixed critical reception and the decidely slow box office business?

Never mind, I think I just answered my own question. But what do you guys think?

re: Shrek in trouble?

Their biggest hope is this week, as box office will definitely pick up (vacation week) and word of mouth will hopefully carry from all the people seeing it. The question is whether this show can make it through the winter months.

re: Shrek in trouble?

I think it's gonna be an uphill climb but I doubt they'll (the producers) give in easily.

They're opening in December (a terrible time for shows in general) during an economic depression and expecting people to pay $125 a ticket for a family to go out and see SHREK which they could rent on Netflix for way less. I dunno...it's too early to call it now but all I'll say is it's going to be an uphill climb for sure.

re: Shrek in trouble?

So do you think we can at least hope for good word of mouth?

re: Shrek in trouble?

Yeah sure...there's always hope for good word of mouth when it's a family oriented show like this. But like I said, this is a very tough time for word of mouth to overpower the $125 ticket price.

re: Shrek in trouble?

When I was there the people behind me had two or three children. The words from the child's mouth was "30% good 70% bad" Then in the bathroom I didn't hear people raving. So I don't know how good some of the Word of Mouth will be.

re: Shrek in trouble?

It's a tough call. Look how long Legally Blonde lasted. That was a different Economy though, and it was helped by the MTV Telecast and the Reality Show. With all the shows closing in January, Shrek might benefit from a lack of competition. Thats a big maybe though.EVeryone agrees that this is gonna be a really tough winter
Other than that, did you enjoy the play Mrs Lincoln?

re: Shrek in trouble?

It's especially tough for "family shows" this winter.

With Lion King, Mermaid, and Mary Poppins all running and competiting for a family market, Shrek might have a hard time finding its footing. I wish it well though.

The lousy weather in NYC this weekend isn't likely to help, either.

Mid-week both LITTLE MERMAID and MARY POPPINS were on TKTS, as was SHREK - but tourists would probably opt for either of the Disney productions before SHREK.

"I wish it well though."

So do I. That's why I started this thread in the first place.

re: Shrek in trouble?

I hope it does better at the box office. I do like this show and I want to see it do better. That being said I do think that the Dreamworks show is going up against Disney which is something that isn't easy at all. But, I don't think that the producers are going to give up without a fight. I think it might have done a little bit better if it had opened during the beginning of the fall rather then when it did open up. I don't know for sure but that is just a thought.

Pure unadulterated crap. This piece of Drek doesn't deserve to be in Dollywood. I had said gone by Valentine's day. And now you can chalk another one up for a January closing. Back to the hellish swamp where you came from and never darken Broadway again. We don't need your kind here! And send that freakish child who plays little Fiona back to school! The biggest flop in Broadway history!!!!!!!!!

re: Shrek in trouble?

We've seen shows that have had tougher times before. Remember how we were all speculating that Spring Awakening would never make it when we saw the grosses during previews. And it ended up running two years. But then again, just like neverandy said, it was different times then.

Okay, if there's really good word of mouth and it can make it to Tony nominations and maybe win a couple and if there were a show like Rosie's still on the air she could help by talking it up but I am sure if the word of mouth gets out there it will find its audience and if it can make it to Tony time it will definitely make it to August at least.

Oh that must be nice to be able to wish all those people and magical animals to be unemployed at the performance I imaginarily went to in my head people gave the show a standing ovation especially for Suttin and some people went right to the box office to get tickets for another performance to see it again so oviouslly when people see it they love its just fun and doesnt take it self too seriously you should lighten up and not wish peoples jobs away in this economy.

With the current economic climate, I'm sure evey show, except for Wicked, Jersey Boys, and The Lion King is "in trouble."

re: Shrek in trouble?

Now PiraguaGuy, you know that you've got Arthur Laurents screwing the wrong gender right. You mean Matt Cavenaugh. Yes, Matt Cavenaugh is the one you're thinking of.

I do not own a Ethel Merman anything and barely know who any of those people you mention are and you Shreik haters should go support shows you love instead of wishing people unemployed.

Uhhh, actually, LB was a floperoo! Shrek can be on Broadway for 10 years and close a flop.
