I wonder if they are going to model the theater after some of the European ones. The theater's that Stage Entertainment owns are gorgeous!

The Klaw opened in 1921 and came down in 1954

The guy who designed the Kerr also designed this. It only seated about 800 so it would have been a straight play house.

Would be tricky but not impossible, I quite like the Hafen Theatre which houses the Lion King in Hamburg but I could not see a similar theatre being built on Broadway or the West End, Something like the Neue Flora Theater also in Hamburg would be more doable.

Or if the Ed Sullivan Theatre ever returns to legit use, it could reclaim its original name (which was for Oscar II's grandfather, but nevertheless...)

Could The Ed Sullivan ever return to theatrical use? Would have thought it would need a major overhaul since it's been a television studio for over 50 years.

If the New Amsterdam could be brought back, anything is possible. Having said that , the Ed Sullivan ain't going anywhere. The Hellinger would be a better case for renewal if the church gives it up as much less work would need to be done.

Notice the Nedicks next to the theater.

The Hellinger has been kept in great condition so it probably wouldn't be too hard to turn it back into a theatre.

New theater being built if you mean this particular news story. If you mean the Times Square Theater's re-development in general, it was almost the home of "Broadway 4D" until financing dried up. Could it still be re-opened as a theater? Good question...

Phyllis- Just what this city needs, another theatre.

They could call it the Joshua Logan Theatre. I prefer the Trude Rittman Theatre.

Also, for those of you familiar with that stretch of 45th Street, the parking garage in question is not where they are thinking about building the theatre (the former site of the Klaw Theatre). They would however, level that small parking lot and area where some of the tents stand. They specifically mentioned where Kazino laid stake. (The lot just west of the parking garage.)

Reidel wants people to email him names for the new theatre, which he says he will pass along to The Shubert Organization.

How about Morosco? (My wife says that the first production at the new Morosco would be a revival of The Drowsy Chaperone.) :)

I think the Hammerstein is a great name. Sounds regal.

And it seems a shame to not have them represented on Broadway. But yet Sondheim gets a theater?
