I am planning a quick overnight trip to NYC sometime at the end of June or beginning of July. I don't know much about Shuffle Along but the cast alone has me interested. For anyone who has seen the show, do you recommend it? What could you compare it to? Also, I want to see it before Audra leaves on July 24. Are my chances of seeing her up until them better at a Wednesday matinee or a Wednesday evening performance?
I am also considering seeing The Color Purple due to the cast particularly, Cythia Erivo. I saw The Color Purple twice years ago with with LaChance and Renée Elise Goldsberry and loved it I still listen to the cast recording quite often. Is this version different enough to warrant seeing the show for a third time? I just hesitate when there are so many shows to see. I would love to see Hamilton again but that is impossbile!
Your opinions on both of these shows, and any other recommendations are greatly appreciated!

The Color Purple is definitely worth a revisit, the new revival is absolutely fantastic. I also loved Shuffle Along, so honestly if you can see both, do it! They're both so worth it!

I was literally just about to post the exact same scenario. I am torn!
Thanks for the reply pupscotch!
Good to know I am not alone TexanAddams18!
Is 4th row orchestra too close for Shuffle Along?
The Color Purple is not to be missed - the show has gotten even better now that Heather Headley has joined, and Cynthia Erivo is out of this world. As for Shuffle Along, I personally REALLY disliked pretty much everything about it except for the choreography.
I haven't seen The Color Purple, though I'm dying to since Heather Headley has joined the cast, but I thought Shuffle Along was pretty spectacular. For whatever problems the show has, it's a tremendous cast and the choreography is out of this world.

Totally agree.

This^ nearly to a T. I 'appreciated' Shuffle Along, but didn't love it -- but I did see it before the week's shut down/re-work.
The Color Purple? IS A MUST. Amazing, amazing, amazing. I, too, loved the original -- but this blows it out of the water. SEE IT>
Sit 4th row for Color Purple so you can be close to Cynthia Erivo. Sit front row of the mezzanine for Shuffle so you can see Savion Glover's choreography.
I was thinking that Shuffle Along was the type of show that would be best sitting a little further back to take in the full scope of the choreography PalJoey. Closer for The Color Purple would be good to see facial expressions. Just waiting to hear if I have been approved for the vacation time off of work before I start buying tickets! Hopefully, there will be good seats left for both when I am ready to make the purchase. I know there is no guarantee but any thoughts if the Wednesday matinee or evening performance would increase my chances of seeing Audra in Shuffle Along?
I loved The Color Purple when I saw it in December. So I highly recommend it. I'm going back to New York end of July and I'm thinking of seeing it again. There are front row seats available. Is that too close? I can't remember if the stage is particularly high or not. But I do love sitting up close. I was around 10th row on the side when I saw it last time, so I want to be closer this time
I'm also seeing Shuffle Along and got front row mezz tickets. Thanks, PalJoey! :)
