I like movies being turned into musicals, it gets more of the public and tourists interested in broadway which we need in this rough economy, however I love the fact that they are making fun of this new trend. HAHAHAHAHAHAHA!
I saw both of these concerts at the Zipper and they were HILARIOUS. I can't wait!
Why do people think Movies being turned in to musicals is a new thing/ its been going on for decades

From Ken Davenport's blog:
In the decade starting 30 years ago, 6% of all musicals were based on movies.
In the decade starting 20 years ago, 11% of all musicals were based on movies.
And in the most recent decade, the percent of musicals adapted from movies was 19%.

It's not new, but it's growing!
Nuthin' wrong with a movie being turned into a musical. What's wrong is the utter lack of imagination and the hey-this-was-popular-lets-musicalize-it mentality of SHREK, LEGALLY BLONDE, SPIDER MAN and others.
That said, the revue looks very funny, especially TWISTER.

While I don't think either is the best musical ever, Shrek and Spider-Man strayed somewhat far from the movies, especially Spider-Man, which isn't even using the movie plot.
THE APARTMENT became PROMISES, PROMISES
8 1/2 became NINE
ALL ABOUT EVE became APPLAUSE
NEVER ON SUNDAY became ILLYA DARLING
SOME LIKE IT HOT became SUGAR
SMILES OF A SUMMER NIGHT became A LITTLE NIGHT MUSIC
TWO FOR THE SEESAW became SEESAW
LE NOTTI DI CABIRIA became SWEET CHARITY
PASSIONE D'AMORE became PASSION
... and there are numerous others which didn't carry the film's original title.
Some of those not successful but to some entertaining
1. Never On Sunday - Illya Darling
2. Interview With A Vampire - Lestat
3. Carrie - Carrie
4. East Of Eden - Here's Where I Belong
5. A Hole In The Head - Golden Rainbow
6. The World Of Henry Orient - Henry,Sweet Henry
7. High Society - Same
8. Gigi - Same
9. The Thin Man - Nick & Nora
10.The Wedding Singer - Same
I just wish they would choose some more dramatic films and create something new for a new medium.
There is this perception that if it's a family film or a bubbly comedy then it would make a great musical.
I would love to see someone choose something that doesn't seem like it would be adaptable to the stage. I don't think that 8½ or Grey Gardens seem like musical material, and yet they both turned out to be successful (artistically at least, if not commercially in the case of GG).

^Grey Gardens wasn't exactly bubbly.
Technically High Society was based on the movie The Philadelphia Story.
And even before musicals were based on movies, musicals were based on plays.
How Green Was My Valley = Oklahoma
The Shop Around the Corner (also a movie by the same name and a movie musical called in the Good Ol' Summertime) = She Loves Me
The Matchmaker = Hello Dolly
The Madwoman of Chaillot (also a movie) = Dear World
Pygmalion (also a movie) = My Fair Lady
Carousel was based on a really depressing German play.
and don't forget Spring Awakening.
Romeo and Juliet = West Side Story
I could continue
I LOVE "Blow Her Away" From Twister... SO good!

I don't care whether it is a comedy or a more dramatic movie they turn into a musical - as long as they really pay attention to the script and score and don't go for the first draft of the script and the easiest way to get applauds, which seems to be the case with a crappy MARY POPPINS, which in my book is one of the worst examples of movie turned into a stage musical.
rwlevin- Philadelphia Story was a play, turned into a movie, which was reworked later as a movie musical called "High Society", which the stage musical is based off of. So Mr Roxy is actually right.
I think its fine as long as they don't ruin the script, and as long as they get talented people to play the roles. It also give people who couldn't go see musicals live very much to still be able to enjoy them! Also, lets face it, Broadway needs all the publicity it can get right now...
I don't know if Spider-Man can count as "being based on a movie". The comic was around long before the film series and, based on printed articles, there are characters in the show who have not been introduced in the films yet. It can't stray from the film since it's not based on the film. It's based on the comic book.

Nope. Whether the idea for a show comes from a good book or a well remembered movie, it's all the same and I don't care. Did Rodgers & Hammerstein or Lerner & Loewe worry about where their ideas came from? If it's a good idea, you can make it work. If it's a bad idea, you can still make it work sometimes if you tackle it in a new way. Bring on all those musicals based on movies, plays, books, etc. Just entertain me.
