This whole thread is joke right? First some one posts that Mary Louise Parker is a 'mediocre hollywood stars who can't act' and no one calls them on it and then everyone rushes to defend Sienna Miller's talent? You can't be serious. She's ABYSMAL. Seems like a very nice lady in person and I wish her well, but the bar must be set pretty low these days if that performance is award nomination worthy. In my humble opinion, with the note-able exception of Marin Ireland the whole production is bad.
And to clarify, I generally tend to agree with the sentiment that movie stars tend to eat up space on Broadway (Ms. Miller) that much more able theatre actors could fill, but to include Mary Louise Parker in that group is not only shockingly ignorant of her career, but also just pretty silly. Was her Hedda the greatest performance ever given? No. Not even close. But it was miles ahead of anything that Ms. Miller or Julia Roberts or Julia Stiles have excreted in the past few seasons.
Different strokes, I guess but...
How is being able to portray period-specific behavior any different than being able to do a dialect and needing a coach for that? Or needing a tennis coach if you're playing a tennis player? Shouldn't Angela Lansbury have known how to play tennis like a pro before she was cast, then?
Dialect is no different than etiquette specific to a time or place.
I agree with all that's been said here. I mean, it's called acting for a reason. One shouldn't have to know how to do something or have a particular knowledge about something before doing a show that involves it. I do think that the original poster was a joke in terms of what he/she wrote.
Harper, this might just be a case of different strokes for different folks. I happen to think Parker is an exquisite actress even though I'm the first to admit I hated what she did in Hedda Gabler. And I'm against actors getting parts just because they bring some level of attention from their film acting. But there are plenty of film actors who can turn in stunning performances on stage (and vice versa). But in the case of Sienna Miller, I honestly felt that she turned in a fascinating performance that I was thrilled to watch. And as much as it shocks me to say it, having loved her in many plays (most recently reasons to be pretty and Blasted), Marin Ireland was the weak link in the cast, even if she has the most accomplished stage background of the three.
