There's a very funny article in this week's New Yorker about Sienna Miller, and her need for an "Etiquette" coach.
In my day, we called it an ACTING coach. If someone needs to teach you how to walk, and talk, in a period way? You SHOULDN'T be cast in the role, period.
Roundabout is apparently hedging its bets, because it doesn't want "After Miss Julie" to turn into the same fiasco that "Hedda" did last year with Ms. Parker performing the role like a Valley Girl.
Coupled with their horrible "Birdie," I'm guessing it's too late. Can't Roundabout realize that casting mediocre Hollywood stars who can't act is a BAD IDEA??? There are a TON of great Broadway people who could fill those roles. And actually act them.

Isn't it common for actors (movie and stage) to get coaching in various areas?
Besides, from what we've heard so far, it seems that Sienna Miller is one of the few "Hollywood" actors who actually can act, and act very well, on a stage.
Casting mediocre Hollywood stars who can't act might be a good idea business-wise.
But none of them are Hollywood stars, that's the problem.
Quite common. If an actor is tackling a role with an accent it is quite normal for them to work with a dialect coach to better prepare themselves.
I see no issue with Sienna working with someone who better understands the time period. It's a very accepted practice.

Sure. Meryl has dialect coaches. Lansbury had a Tennis coach for Deuce (to little effect, but stil.)
This is different.
If any of you were auditioning for "The Importance of Being Earnest," and you didn't know how to play an aristocrat, you would have been jettisoned. Immediately. Miller was not.
I'm just saying.
Mediocre hollywood stars who can't act?
Sorry, but I must take issue with your proclamation that Miller is "mediocre" in any sense of the word.
On the contrary, Miller is one of the most brilliant, brightest actresses of her generation. I have not seen MISS JULIE (though I do intend to), but her performances in "Interview" and especially the otherwise disappointing "Factory Girl" are magnificent.
I completely agree with you, munkustrap178. Before seeing After Miss Julie, I was not familiar with Sienna Miller at all, but I was really impressed with her performance. She was my favorite of the three actors in the play. Since seeing it last month, I've rented several of her movies and discovered how talented she was. Interview is by far my favorite, she really blew me away in that. I agree that she is one of the best actresses of her generation.
It's too bad that not all of her movies are that great or she isn't given more roles like that in Interview. Most of all, it's a shame people don't take her seriously and instead form an opinion of her solely based on what they say in the tabloids.
And for what it's worth, I thought she walked and talked fine in After Miss Julie, haha. Make Marin Ireland go to this "Ettiquette" coach instead to learn how to do an accent.
p.s. - Sienna was just on Conan (a repeat) looking so pretty as always. Thanks to After Miss Julie I am a huge fan of hers now. I hope you get to see it soon, munkustrap, and I hope enjoy Sienna's performance as much as I did.

Excuse me? I saw Sienna Miller in Miss Julie and thought she was terrific. Sometimes I get the impression that the only theater experience that counts here is Broadway, but if you check her credits, she's done off-Broadway and was supposed to be great in an Old Vic Shakespeare production in London. I'm not trying to be mean here, but wouldn't you want to wait until you'd see Miss Julie yourself before you started a thread bashing her performance? Just saying....

She was the best part of MISS JULIE.
Saw her in 'As you like it' in the West End and thought she was great (especially as it was around the time the whole Jude Law thing blew up which must have been fairly trying, not to mention there were press practically camped outside the stage door every night). I'd certainly jump at the chance to see her on stage again!
Did the original poster even see this production of After Miss Julie?

Considering how well BIRDIE is doing at the box office and the fact that it just extended through April, I think many, many people would argue that it is actually a very GOOD idea.

When exactly WAS your day, Ziggy?
Sienna is stunning in AFTER MISS JULIE. Have you seen the show yourself, Ziggy? Have you ever even seen any of her movies? She's known for being in the tabloids because her life is admittedly quite scandalous. But her film work is VERY good and I totally agree with the posters who said she is one of the best actresses of her generation. And her performance in MISS JULIE confirms that.
I'm glad so many people can attest to her incredible acting abilities and not just judge her based on her reputation with the tabloids.
Why does it even matter is she went to an "Etiquette" coach anyway? All (good) actors usually try to familiarize themselves with the setting of their play/film/whatever, especially if it involves speaking differently. And Sienna is doing an incredible job as Miss Julie.

It is?
I had no idea who she was going into After Miss Julie and I was stunned by her performance. I don't really have a desire to see any of her movies, but as far as I am concerned, she is a gorgeous stage actress.
She was very good in AFTER MISS JULIE...clearly the least experienced of the three but still pretty damn good. I don't know if she's the actress of her generation or anything, but if AMJ is any indication she got something.
Maybe she'll be like Liz Taylor...constantly underrated but durn good.
It is?
Yes. It is.
Saw the show Sunday and was stunned at her performance. How she was able to navigate the psychological turns of the character so elegantly was truly astounding. And she was joined on stage by to equally gifted actors turning in stellar performances.
She may get a nomination out of this! (So far, Laurie Metcalf is the only other one turning in a nomination-worthy performance.)
She is far from a ¨Hollywood star¨
I never realized that it was wrong to get an acting coach. So according to the OP, if you're a singer and your going in for a musical, you shouldn't even dream of auditioning unless you know for sure that you will be able to sing the score perfectly on your own without any help? So basically, a musical theatre performer working on a score with their voice teacher/coach is also considered to be unprofessional?

Thank you.
