Wasn't one of the original ideas for Phantom II: Electric Boogaloo that it would open while the original one was still playing? That way the people (the few people) who haven't seen The Phantom Of The Opera can see that before they see Phantom II: Electric Boogaloo.
I will admit, I do like Phantom. However, I am very weary of the whole aspect of a sequel for many reasons, but also because there has always been a bad history of sequels in the past.
As for bad amateur productions, I would think it would be harder to do Starlight Express then it would be to do Cats. For Starlight Express, you need the whole roller skating aspect of the show. For an amateur production of Cats, you just need bad dancers in leotards who can't dance or sing and over act like hell.
