It could happen.

Think how effective the final scene in the original show will be with a sequel down the street. The Phantom, devastated by the loss of Christine sings, "It's over now, the music of the night."

...But only a hermit who has been living in a cave for months before coming out to see a couple of Broadway shows will have missed the massive publicity campaign that is coming. He or she will know it's not over. "Buck up, Phanty. You're going to get another chance on Coney Island!"

I have a feeling that ALW will close the original once the sequel comes to fruition. I can see him saying "It's time for another chapter of the Phantom's story". I just pray he doesn't subject us to countless bad amateur productions staged around the country. Please, spare us that.

Wasn't one of the original ideas for Phantom II: Electric Boogaloo that it would open while the original one was still playing? That way the people (the few people) who haven't seen The Phantom Of The Opera can see that before they see Phantom II: Electric Boogaloo.

I will admit, I do like Phantom. However, I am very weary of the whole aspect of a sequel for many reasons, but also because there has always been a bad history of sequels in the past.


As for bad amateur productions, I would think it would be harder to do Starlight Express then it would be to do Cats. For Starlight Express, you need the whole roller skating aspect of the show. For an amateur production of Cats, you just need bad dancers in leotards who can't dance or sing and over act like hell.

I found this post quite interesting seeing that you seem to follow his roles and career yet still don't like him. You've even bought his album. Why?

I have to disagree with your comments on his work ethics. I have never seen him phone in a performance nor have I heard anyone connected with him say that. In fact, those who I have heard speak of him who have worked with him have said that he may keep himself to himself at times but his dedication to the work is insane. With his current role, I can see why people have compared his intensity to that of Health Ledger's as the joker.

What I found funny about your post is that if ALW had bad feedback of his ethics and performance he would have not have hired Ramin for this huge role, if it's true that Ramin in fact has been offered the part. He probably wouldn't have had Ramin back three times to create the Phantom in the sequel on three occasions either. Ramin also I think has been the only Phantom to have been nominated for best take over for the Theatregoers' Choice Awards. So I would have thought he's doing a great job. He's never struck me as an actor who would get bored or at least let that come across in his performances. You are right about him not coming from a theatre school route but I have spoken to him at stage door many times and find him quite astute when it comes to acting techniques and he seems to have taught himself. I know he is a fan of Mesnier and Stratsberg (sp?) He tends to do lots of research for roles especially The Phantom where he has studied Autism for it. I think that's why the character seems more human and heartfelt. I think it's refreshing his instinctive approach as opposed to doing the normal theatre route.

Not to mention that he probably, in my opinion has one of the most exciting voices in Theatre and with how he currently plays the Phantom, I don't know how he does that eight times a week with that intensity.

Sounds like you may not like him as a person or have fallen out with him. Each to their own I guess.

----About amateur productions. Last year, R.U.G tried an experiment in which they allowed six high schools and colleges to perform the show. I assume that they were trying to find out how well---or badly---the show could be done by non-professionals with out the resources of professional theater.

As far as I know R.U.G. has not commented on how well they think the experiment went.
