Significant Others for High Schooler?

I don't mean in an "appropriate" way towards language or situation, I mean in an interest/relatable way. For those that have seen it, how much do you think a high school boy will LIKE it or connect to it. I know he'll understand it, but if the potential isn't there for him to love it, I'd rather take him to something else.

The show is about a gay man watching his female friends get married and start their lives. It's very funny, modern (which is good for your young person), and actually pretty moving. I suppose you'd have to consider your audience. Is he more of a tough guy who would just want a comedy or action-packed storyline or is he able to connect with his emotions?

Yes, I know what it's about...but that doesn't help determine if younger audience members will be able to relate to it. Some plays are more universal than others...just trying to get a read on it.

^ Which is why I asked more about your "younger audience member." All young people are not alike. I know many who would enjoy the play and others who would hate it. There is not one show that is "universal" and that all people will love.

He's not either of those things. He's an intelligent, theater savvy young man. He's comfortable with sexuality being a theme. His tastes span a wide variety. Loved The Color Purple AND Book of Mormon.

I realize that no show is a universal...but you can also make some generalities. Since high school kids aren't particularly interested in marriage, I'm just asking if the themes go beyond that.

Yes, I think there are themes beyond that.

It's a play about friendships, relationships, people and their lives changing. An 18 year old's friends may not be getting married but they're going of to college, maturing, etc. Relationships aren't static so I think anyone can relate to that.

Then yes, I'd say he'd be able to relate. It's not necessarily about marriage as much as it is about loneliness and friendship. There's a lot in it that is also funny and relatable in terms of the world we live (for example, Facebook or Instagram stalking someone you're interested in or the vanity of the characters).

I think it would be a great show for a mature HS student -- it's as funny as any great TV or movie comedy, but it's also profoundly relatable. At any age, we've had people drift in and out of our lives. And you'll be able to say you saw Gideon Glick do this role before he gets swallowed up by hollywood!

(And if they've seen Mormon, the language in Significant Other is far more tame)
