I, sadly did not read the reviews before going in. This was an insufferable, very looooong evening. Which is something to say because it was an intermission-less 1.45.
A vanity project for a woman with an ok voice who has a serious case of talent dysmorphia. She couldn’t act, she was wearing flats the whole time, and she was clearly in love with herself.
The hologram of Hammerstein was pretty cool at first, but was used way too much, and became tiresome very quickly.
AVOID THIS. It is horrible, lifeless, joyless, uninspired, and the audience members who stayed mocked the show near the end out loud and afterward.
It’s one of the worst things and biggest wastes of time I’ve ever seen on a N.Y. stage.

Since they are doing Thursday matinees, I figured I should go and see it. But, in reading your post, Pippin, and several of them on the link that you provided Carmen A3, perhaps I shouldn't see it....

You're making the right decision. Remember that would have been 1:45hrs you couldn't get back. If you're looking for a good off-Bway show, I'd recommend safeword. It's from the playwright that wrote Afterglow.

Nealb1- I would definitely skip it.
There’s nothing new to discover or learn, no “hidden gem” Hammerstein songs, just the well known ones we’ve heard hundreds of times before, and no real insight to Hammerstein’s life.
The only (sort of) redeeming things about this production are the projections, and the fact that a few of the arrangements are fun, but half of the songs are given the elevator jazz music “Bossa nova” treatment. This gets old pretty quickly.
And to top off the whole miserable evening, even though there were two performers, only the woman took the final bow (fitting since it’s her vanity project), and she didn’t even acknowledge the band..... that’s a bit nit- picky, but it’s just rude, IMO. You could feel her ego and entitlement as she took the lip of the stage to bow.
Trust me, I’m doing you a solid, here..... DO. NOT. GO.

BAND??? You’re joking. It’s track and can move easily to every Holland America cruise ship in the fleet.

Got it. I only heard the synth and assumed it was all track.
Someone has to actually sit there and play these elevator music arrangements? Geesh.
