Yes. People pay to hear the performers, not the audience members.
And it's not like we're paying $5 or $6...it's up there in the $80-$100's.

Posted: 7/5/05 at 10:00pmIt's really annoying. During shows people feel like they know the songs and should sing along , but it's really bothersome to other audience members who can hear them.

Make sure you sing before the show while everyone makes it to their seats or perhaps during intermission.

Hah...
YES it is annoying. Even if you are just moving your mouth to the words, and no soundis coming out. I was in a show last summer, with a HUGE audience, but this one night, there was this guy sitting a few rows back, right in the center and he was signing along. I came offstage after the first performance and I was like "Am I the only one annoyed by that guy singing along" and everyone else started bitching about how distracting it was too. And after the show my brother, who isn't big into my whole theatre stuff in the first place, was complaining that he culdn't pay attention at all because of the same guy singing along beside him. He said he was quite close to sticking the playbill in a very uncomfertable spot.

Posted: 7/5/05 at 10:12pmDon't sing along ever... I definitely agree that it is annoying, and not what you pay good money to see. If you want, sing while you are walking there, before the show, during intermission, after the show... just not DURING the show!

Posted: 7/5/05 at 10:15pmI absolutely hate it too, I heard they stopped a regional showing of Les Miz because too many ppl were singing along. this 13 year olf girl and her friends were doing that when I saw les miz, I wanted to shove my foot so far up their ass. But I got through it. I try not to even mouth the words during a great show I just enjoy it and listen to all the talent. If someone sang and ruin a solo of mine I would be such a diva, thatd make me really mad. They should have a disclaimer :warning do not sing during show, danger of foot sodomy, not the kind you might like:

Posted: 7/5/05 at 10:17pmI mean...I try really hard not to sometimes, because just seeing all this music performed live makes me wanna get up there and hop around...I just smile because it's just such a beautiful thing. [/corniness]

I understand the urge to do it, but if you follow through on that urge and happen to be sitting by me, I can't promise you'll leave the theater with all your limbs.
There are sometimes sing-along productions of shows like Mary Poppins. Save it for then. :)

I hate this. Especially during jukebox musicals. I mean, good for you, you know the artist's entire collection of greatest hits. But need you practically belt the entire show, just a *bit* off-key?
Bad 'Mamma Mia!' experience. A whole family wouldn't shut up during "Knowing Me, Knowing You"...

Posted: 7/5/05 at 11:16pmEvery time I see HELLO, DOLLY! there's this guy who not only sings the songs, he mouths the dialogue and hums the change of set music. He's extremely irritating!

"I have a really hard time not doing it while at RENT."
Judging from my experience with seeing the show, you're not the only one. Hopefully you contain your urge better than others.
Seriously, I understand the urge at certain shows and if you know the music, but it's not a concert, and I will shoot evil glares in your direction if you do it.

If I ever end up next to someone singing, they may get PUMMELED.
Oh, ok, I wouldn't actually hit them but I'd hit them with my EVIL STARES :0)
It's just rude. End of story. Audition for the show.

Posted: 7/6/05 at 12:42amEven before the Curtain Call, plenty fo people did it at Spamalot. At first it was kind of annoying, but it's such a cult following that I ended up minding less.

Posted: 7/6/05 at 12:58amI hate it when people sing along. On tuesday at All Shook Up, a woman behind me was singing along very loudly, and I told her to be quiet. At intermission, she was like, "Oh, i've seen the show 5 times, I know all the music and love it! If you'd seen it as much as me, you'd be singing along too." And I just smiled and said, "I've seen this show 13 times, and I don't sing along. I paid to hear the performers sing, not you." And she was quiet the rest of the show.
