Posted: 8/23/04 at 3:57pmif you had to sit through it like i did, you'd know why it was closing. A half-hour sitcom (surprise! it's Larry Gelbart!) stretched to an unbearable two hours.

Who is your source? I really hope you are kidding.
I just went this weekend and it was a terrific production.

We were invited, and whoever the contact was told us.
Also, telecharge has adjusted their information.

That sucks! Rachel York won't be on Broadway at the moment! grrrr!
She should get cast as EVA in Evita! :)

Broadway.com is carrying the story saying they close on 8/29...and though they often jump the gun on things, I'd say that this at least partly confirms what the original post said.
So apologize for screaming 'liar, liar, pants on fire'

Professor Irwin Corey is so funny in the show he almost made me have an accident.
I would lobby to save the show but I AM TIRED!
Pretty soon, the only shows running on Broadway will be Lion King and the Producers.
I am really getting upset.
I'm so sad.
Sob!

Yep, Margo...box office is confirming too.
Hardly worth the effort for Richard Kind et al to rehearse for this. Too bad

Their contact has a 2 week out. They would have had to announce it yesterday to close next Sunday - it would have leaked. You're wrong.
Um...yeah.

Posted: 8/23/04 at 5:55pmThey JUST installed the new cast. Why would they do this now? They didn't see this coming a few weeks ago? Imagine how the actors feel. Really, it sucks.

Posted: 8/23/04 at 6:10pmIn reply to my own comments, I just saw last week's grosses - 34%? Wow. Guess the show needed Dreyfus.

Posted: 8/23/04 at 6:18pmI saw it with the original cast and loved it. All the stars were great. I am a big Dreyfuss fan. I can't believe it is closing. This is getting ridiculous. I missed Caroline or Change because they closed before I got to see it. I had tixs for September.

Ragtime, no one is contesting what they would have to pay the actors in compensation, but you seemed to indicate in your original post that the person reporting the closing was wrong because the info hadn't been leaked yet or because they would have to announce two weeks in advance.
There have been shows closed the day of a performance. What they do behind the scenes to compensate actors and patrons is a different question. It's ashame for this new cast that they went through the rehearsals and opened with only a week before they found out they would be closing.
Well, it will give Kind time to get in shape for the Producers role in January. :)
