Hello. For those of you lucky persons who went to Mara Davi's first show as "Janet Van De Graff" in "Drowsy", please tell us how she did? Inquiring minds want to know... Thanks, RC in Austin, Texas
Haha. Someone will review her eventually.
Well, I hope it's sooooon! I'm dying to hear how she is!! I'm really hoping for her Show Off to show up on youtube soon too! hehe.
I'm sure she's like a million times better than that Janine. But I'm curious how she'll compare to Sutton.

I didn't win the lotto tonight, so I am going to try for Saturday.

If (when) I lose Hairspray's lotto again tomorrow, I'm gonna try Drowsy. If I win that one, I'll let you know.
I actually just bought a $25 ticket for Drowsy on Sunday so I don't have to deal with the lotto. So I will report back Sunday, not Saturday.
I'm sure she's like a million times better than that Janine.
- Umm. Too bad she doesn't have half the resume of Janine.

What does resume have to do with anyway? She has the perfect voice and look for it.
YAY! I can;t wait to hear about her Show Off! *is jealous that you guys get to see her* I'm actually really excited to see her Janet. I hope she does this show for a while. She was with ACL for about a year, right? So I should be all set. Cause I MIGHT get to go back to NYC in Nov to see Sutton in Young Frankestein!! SOOO EXCITED!!
Sorry, random.

Because Janine has a lot more experience than this chick. And people are making it sound like Janine is some crappy chorus girl.
ljay - your probably talking about me. Sorry, but I saw her Show Off on youtube and I saw Sutton's in person. Experencing Sutton's first hand it was a literal show stopper. Everyone was clapping and cheering through out the whole show and at the end everyone just went wild for about 5 mins after. With Janine she just didn't have that affect. Her voice to me just seems wrong for that song. She didn't do the jump split - or a lot of things that Sutton did for that matter. And the audience just didn't go wild over her. They clapped for like a second and it was over.
Sorry if it came out rude. I'm sure Janine is talented, but I just don't think she was right for Janet Van de Graff AT ALL!! I never even heard of her before that, so I don't know how she usually performs, but I just didn't like her Show Off. And that's Drowsy's big number so it's important to get that show stopper affect.
So, what I meant was I'm sure Mara gives the show stopper affect better than Janine did. Is that worded better?

I'm interviewing her between shows this Saturday... expect the article up on the BWW.com main page by Monday night.
That's awesome! Do you work for this site? Just wondering, how do you get a job doing that? I would LOVE to do that!
She's so sweet. Will that be your first time meeting her? Will there be pictures too? :)
~Darci
I've worked for this site going on 2 years (search my name) and am assuming the News Desk Editor position at the end of this month.
It's going to be a phone interview so no video or audio (though I met her during the SF pre-Bway engagement last summer).
If you're interested in being a volunteer intern for the site keep your eyes open on Rob's Broadway Pulse (as he often calls out for local help, most recently Chicago). If you have good writing and networking skills and are of a decent age, you could also drop one of us a line with a resume and writing sample.
Just too clarify, its "show-stopping Effect" not "Affect".
Thats just been bothering me.
=)
You're comparing a live performance to one you saw on youtube? Yikes.

What show are you talking about? "Drowsy" was in LA if I recall.

I think he means ACL.
Mille ~ How early into her run was the illegal recording put up? Because I saw her throughout her run, and while her early performances were a little shaky, she got better and better in it, putting her own twist on the role as all of the replacements have done.

Yeah, no kidding.
And for what it's worth, I saw your beloved Sutton Foster, and she was nothing to write home about.
"Umm. Too bad she doesn't have half the resume of Janine."
Who cares?
Janine is a good actress, but maybe not "right" for this role. In my opinion, Mara Davi has a better look and voice for the role.
I think the video of Janine was pretty close to when she first started. Not sure. Don't care.
MusicalFan - If you didn't love Sutton in Drowsy, fine. But I've admired Sutton since she basically changed my life when I saw her in Thoroughly Modern Millie so I am entitled to my opinion of how she did, just like you are. I realize not everyone is crazy about her, but I personally feel that she is the most talented performer on Broadway right now. You don't have too, but you don't have to knock me down for it. I don't knock you down for not liking her performence.

I am not even a big Sutton fan, and I will vouch that she was better than Janine. Just because Janine has a lot of stage experience doesn't make her right for every character. That's like saying Bernadette Peters would make a great Elphaba. Janine was fine, but nowhere near as good as Sutton. I personally am excited for Mara, as I think she will be the best Janet yet.
