Why has their not been a theatre named after our resident genious Stephen Sondheim?

My only idea is that he was humble enough to decline.

they could rename one of those theaters named after big companies for him, i cant think of an example- what theater is fiddler playing? i think that was the one but i might be wrong...

ANYWAY- i hate that, it just sounds rediculous "The AT&T Theater" uck

I think a Hammerstein Theatre on Broadway would be nice.

While I dream, I'll buy back the old Mark Hellinger (now Times Square Church).

I, too, am not a fan of the commercial names on Broadway houses (I still refuse to say 'Cadillac' when referring to the Winter Garden)...it detracts from the class, in my opinion.

The Sondheim Theatre in London will be a new theatre. It is a Cameron Mackintosh project. He plans that it should be a small, intimate theatre - something along the lines of the Donmar, I imagine.

It is not surprising that London should decide to recognize Sondheim with a theatre named after him before his native city does so. Often his shows have received greater success and acclaim across the Atlantic and "Side By Side By Sondheim" and "Putting It Together" were created in the UK. - and there's the old addage of a prophet not being recognized in his homeland! Does that mean there will be a Lloyd Webber Theater in New York? LOL

At one time there were several Hammerstein theatres - named for the producer - the father of the lyricist. The "Ed Sullivan' theatre, where David Letterman does his show, was origially the Hammerstein.

Gerry Schoenfeld refuses to rename any of the Shubert houses. This rules out the Majestic, Plymouth, Royale, Imperial, Longacre, Broadway and Ambassador. The Winter Garden, Lyceum and Music Box have too historically ingrained names as does the Nederlander-owned Palace to change them.

But certainly someone could rename the Minskoff (named after the developer and theatre investor who put up the building it is in), the Marquis (named for the ugly hotel in which it resides), Circle in the Square (a bankrupt entity), St. James, Studio 54 (a disco for God's sake), even the Biltmore.

Not only Sondheim but Ethel Merman, Mary Martin, Cole Porter, Julie Harris and Colleen and Jason could have theatres named for them.

I call the American Airlines Theatre by its given name, the Selwyn, and I still call the Neil Simon the Alvin. I can't break the habit with the latter.

RIP: the George Abbott, Morosco (the best theatre in NY), the first Helen Hayes, Bijou, the original Ziegfeld, and Playhouse all of which bit the dust in my lifetime. And the Hudson and Henry Miller's too.

I like the fact that the Alvin was renamed the Simon...from one chipmunk to another! Maybe next they can re-name it the Theodore, in honor of Lee Becker-Theodore - the actress-dancer-choreographer who originated the role of Anybodys in West Side Story.

I vote that the Minskoff be renamed the Sondheim!!! See...I'd say Circle in the Square, but I think that it's an excellent name...too cool to get rid of.

while we are on the subject of sondheim, who here has seen "putting it together"? it was on tv last night, and i missed most of "the sopranos" for it, which is a pretty big deal for me. it is just packed full of genius, i tell you, genius! not only a sondheim review, but carol burnette and ruthie henshaw on the same stage??!! wow!

Kevin...There was a Hammerstein Theatre on Broadway...it's now kwown as The Ed Sullivan Theatre, home of The David Letterman Show.

I know... it would still nice to have the younger Hammerstein honored in such a way... it would sound nicer than, say Ford Center or American Airlines...
