i did not have time yet to review and assess a "best version" of each song.

I choose the newest versions of follies and merrily because ive been listening to them recently.

I didnt care much for theobc version of giants so threw huddleston version in as an alternative.

just listened today to the london cast version and probably like that best so far

initial goals for this list was to find the top 100 sondheim songs that

1) seem to be recognized and regarded as favorites and a true "top 100" sondheim works

2) are also songs i enjoy(cant get my arms around ballad of booth at all, so left it off. given goal #1 i will put it back on because so many different sources cite booth as a favorite or top sondheim song.

I also created it because connecting with and truly appreciating sondheim can be daunting, and getting access to songs that are truly great can encourage people to explore further

I beleive sondheim is kinda like shakespeare, in that trying to appreciate shakespeare by reading it is a crappy way to learn to appreciate it.

I never fell in love with a little night music until id seen it performed live with a really good cast(ACT SF)

I also wanted to use this exercise to get more familiar with songs i was not familiar with previously so i could expand my sondheim education and appreciation. i have seen all his major works live now except for passion, and pacific overtures....

I grew up with the movie and movie cast recording of west side story, so it feels more comfortable and familiar to me (and reminds me of my mom, who would sing and dance along to all these great songs)

would love any suggestions and expertise on favorite versions of songs and also any songs missing that must be on this list....

I learn sooooo much from being part of this board

its also very comforting knowing im not the only human being in the world completely obsessed with musicals(and that im not crazy)
