Hi everyone,

I am looking to put together a musical revue to direct with a friend next term. Our theme is the cycle of love and relationships. We are looking for lesser known music, particularly men's solos, but any suggestions would be greatly appeciated.

Thank you all so much in advance!! Updated On: 1/8/05 at 09:46 PM

Revue? Well, I'm sure there's something from I Love You, You're Perfect, Now Change.

First of all, it's "revue" not "review."

I'd look at The Last Five Years, Songs for a New World, Lippa's The Wild Party and Passion. They've all got great songs about love and relationships. If you want to look a little harder, Peter Mills' Taxi Cabaret has a wonderful song called "How Long."

Something from Last Five Years would be perfect

For women's songs,
Old Friend from "I'm Getting My Act Together and Taking it On the Road"
Someone Else's Story from "Chess"
Back to Before from "Ragtime"

For men's solos:
My Chance To Survive The Night from "In Trousers"
Being Alive from "Company"
If I Have To Live Alone from "The Baker's Wife"

If anyone ever tells you that you put too much Parmesan cheese on your pasta, stop talking to them. You don't need that kind of negativity in your life.

"Marry Me" from The Rink
"We Live on Borrowed Time" by David Friedman
"Goodbye, Old Girl" from Damn Yankees

It's certainly not little known, but you can't beat "On the Street Where You Live" as a male solo love song.

Hope this helps.

Pass it on - Take a kid to a show.

"fine fine line" from ave q
definitely look at the last five years for mens or womens songs
if you can find it - "only he" from the orignal starlight express is awesome for a soprano
triumph of love - i think it's called "teach me not to love you" would be a great duet
"love i hear" from forum for a tenor

that's all i can think of at the moment

"Nothing is an accident, We are free to have it all, We are what we want to be, It's in ourselves to rise or fall!!" - "Fortune Favors the Brave" from Aida - the love that never died

Try Company or some William Finn stuff, a New Brain and Falsettos may have some, as well as the Elegies collection (although I'm not sure there's published sheet music for that)

P.s. yay for my first broadwayworld.com post

Thanks for the suggestions everyone.

I do not know Last Five Years but as that came up more than once I will definitely look into it.

Company does have some fabulous music but we just closed a production of that. What has William Finn done other than New Brain and Falsettos? I don't know anything about Elegies. All I know of Finn's is New Brain and Falsettos and I'm not too fond of New Brain except for a few songs.

Well I'd go with RENT but thats probably becuase I'm a fan. Anyways I dont know if you are just looking for stage musicals but maybe the songs from Moulin Rouge? I know its a little mainstream and it can be too "hollywood" at times but I, for one, Really love the songs and lyrics and Ewan Mcgregor has a great voice.

Ewan McGreggor does NOT have a good voice. Well, I guess he does, if you like people screaming instead of singing.

William Finn has written In Trousers, Falsettos, Falsettoland (the last two were combined to form Falsettos), A New Brain (listen to it again, you might like it), Elegies: a song cycle, The Royal Family of Broadway (unfinished) and is about to debut his show The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee Off-Broadway. Go and buy his CD "Infinite Joy" which is a concert of his music at Joe's Pub in New York. It's got some great lesser-known stuff on it.

Good luck with the revue.

Eh, well I like his voice but that's just me. He isnt my favorite singer obviously but I dont think he is a BAD singer.
