For those of you who think that there is not a production of Songs in NYC this fall- please check out theatermania.com. We are running from 10/11-10/25 at the Chernuchin theater on w 54th street. Jason Robert Brown has given permission for this production based on a submitted concept. We are already sold out for several shows.
Songs at Halo Askew Entertainment
Have the CD up next to listen to at work. Love the music. Your link didn't work for me though.

so I saw it and I must say, i was sadly not impressed at all. The main 4 leads where clearly talented although a bit vocally tired and not warmed up at all 1st act. for the youth ensemble... lots of vocal talent, but it was clear that most of them had no idea what the music was about. I don't think this show needs them at all either. it just turned into strange "13" moments.
Like i said, i believe that there is a lot of talent but the overall concept and direction was VERY off in my mind.

I saw the show last night and loved it. This was a different interpretation and it absolutely worked for me. The cast, both the adults and the youth ensemble, was so talented and they definitely brought a different slant to these songs that I found fresh and exciting. And when the entire cast joined in, well.. it was something!
Too often we have a fixed way how we want to see or hear an old favorite that can cause us to be close minded. This "Songs" took me to an unexpected place and it totally succeeded.

i have seen the show done several differnt ways aside from the orig off bway and i just thought it lacked so much of the "knowing" that music like this needs. Also there was a great deal of movement on stage at very strange parts... has this show been reviewed?

i just read on line a rave review of the show from EDGE.
i hope you think they're not a shill.

Caught another viewing Sunday afternoon and Jason Robert Brown was there and did a talkback after the show! He was very complimentary of the show, cast and musicians. He was funny, engaging, and quite entertaining!
I saw the Sunday performance as well and it was certainly moving. I am generally not a big fan of plotless musical reviews, but this production has such a distinct perspective and each of the actors experience such a clear and gut-wrenching emotional journey that a plot appears where once there was none. The addition of the ensemble also gives a wonderful richness to a lot of the music. I can't imagine many of these songs being nearly as satisfying without the vocal power of the full ensemble behind them.
And the Jason Robert Brown talk back was a wonderful surprise. It's always interesting to hear how composers feel about various productions of their work.

Wow...
"DEBBIE SLEVIN of Demarest was not the first person who wanted to bring “Songs for a New World,” the 1995 Off Broadway musical by Jason Robert Brown, back to the stage in New York. But she was the first person to get Mr. Brown’s permission."
That starts the NY Times article and it's DEAD WRONG. Some fact checking???
Samsara Theatre Company was given permission to do it in NY a few years ago. I worked on that production, and not only was it in Manhattan, but unlike this current production (which is off-off Broadway), we were in an Off-Broadway Venue (Theatre at St. Luke's).
The NY Times fact checking dept really missed the boat there.
