Sing what you want...
At auditions, it often gets you noticed, and you arent compared to everyone else singing the same song....
I sang I Dreamed a Dream at auditions for awhile and it always got me noticed.

My first boyfriend used "Some People" for a summer audition. I was 19 and just starting to study theatre so it didn't seem so funny then as it does now.(many, many years later)
So "some people" gets a no.
Michael Ball sings "Broadway Baby" and he owns it!
so "Broadway Baby" yes. (even with ...I'll play the maid)

A white male friend of mine has sung "Waiting for Life" from Once on This Island.
He also has been known to break out into "Popular" from Wicked.

Ain't No Party- Dreamgirls - in fact, most of the female songs from Dreamgirls should probably not be attempted by a male
Gimme, Gimme from Millie would also be a bit silly by a man.

I see no reason why a guy can't sing defying gravity... the lyrics are not gender specific in any sense. It's a nice song and if you cut out the Glinda parts and made it a solo i think it could work!
I don't think there is a problem if a song is re-worked well enough. I heard a man sing "think of me" from poto at a rememberence day parade... was one of the most moving things i've ever witnessed. I mean "i feel pretty" would be well funny if it was sang as a mockery and not seriously. I dunno, i think it's a grey area!

Linda Eder does a beautiful version of I Am What I Am.

There are some people who can really do anything. Honestly, I think so. Linda Eder does pretty well with that too!

"Forget About the Boy" - Millie.
I was listening to it whilst I stumbled upon this thread.

I second "Mama, I'm a Big Girl Now"
And also, anything Christine sings in POTO or anything Glinda sings in Wicked for the sake of the guy's voice.

Defying Gravity was done by my chorus @ our concert... it was so messed up so I am living proof, never give defying gravity to high school kids.
Micheal Crawford singing "Some How Near To You" from Phantom was just wrong, it didnt sound right, he's amazing but i didnt like his redition and I second that Mama Im A Big Girl now even thought I sometimes sing it and make fun of myself.

Posted: 6/4/05 at 12:40amWhy couldn't a guy sing "Forget About the Boy" or the female songs from LITTLE WOMEN or any of the songs mentioned here? Really, I am amazed at such limited thinking.

A lot of songs written for females, sound better with my voice. So I use "Some People" a lot for auditions. Amazing song.
I gender-bend all the time for audtions. Never got a complaint. Even when I did "Rose's Turn". And why not? Its a great song to show how much emotion you can put into a song and thats what the part I was trying out required.

It would seem awkward for Forget About the Boy. I don't know. To me it would be. I think the context is just weird how it's placed. The Little Women tracks, I don't really have a problem with, but it might just be that the most well-known ones are integrated with Sutton Foster, so having a male sing those songs would be compared to Sutton's voice, thus, being "weird".
I suppose one could change "Forget About the Boy" to "Forget About the Girl", and one could also change the female ensemble to a male ensemble. But whatever. You could sing it, but it'd be better sung if it were modified. It's not quite as universal as other songs are.
I didn't mean to offend anyone or anything, but it just sort of popped into my head while I was listening to it.

I'm not getting why that would be awkward.
A man singing about a man. That shouldn't be awkward at all since a man can obviously have feelings for another man. It happens all the time.

::cringes:: That's why I added in the offending part. I completely understand homosexual relationships and support the fact that people can choose whom they wish to be attracted to. Don't take it in offense. It was sort of a reaction.

Posted: 6/4/05 at 9:56amI hope no one was offended by my earlier comment about "Christmas Lullaby". I know that a man COULD sing it, and just have a different interpretation of the lyrics, but I have always connected it with pregnancy, which is weird for a man to sing.

NOT counting the songs that are vocally impossible for 99% of men and sound like shiit if the register is lowered to accomodate a mans voice...
Baby June's solo part in "Baby June and the Newsboys" (and to a lesser extent in "May We Entertain You") from "Gypsy" just sounds wrong for me if tried by a man.
Now the other way around, "Agony" from ITW is really such a rough raw male song and just doesn't work with women.
While not bad "The Girl That I Marry" from "Annie Get Your Gun" would be just weird if song by a women.
